How To Keep Your Car In Top Condition

Once you purchase a new or second-hand vehicle it's easy to get complacent. You may forget that, just like you, a car needs constant maintenance and TLC to make sure it's safe and efficient. With just a few easy steps and checks you can not only save money by avoiding the dreaded MOT failure, but you can also give yourself a piece of mind that your vehicle is in top working condition.

1.Check Your Oil

The simple checks are sometimes the most important. On a level surface, and after the car has cooled check the oil with your dipstick and look at where the level reaches on the marker. Above minimum and below maximum is perfect. Low levels of oil, thick or dry oil residue on the dipstick are all potential warning signs.

2.Check Your Tyre Pressure

Getting the pressure just right is essential to maintaining the health of your tyre. Too low and fuel consumption increases, too high and you risk rapidly increasing tyre wear. Tyre pressure gauges are a cheap and easy way of checking. Whilst doing this don't forget to check the depth of your treads. 1.6mm is the legal requirement.

3.Check Your Coolant Level

This is the simple task of letting the car cool down, opening the cap on the coolant reservoir
and checking the levels. Too low and you can do severe damage to the engine.

4.Check Your Wiper Blades

If your blades aren't dispelling water effectively or juddering on the windscreen they probably need replacing. Check for cuts and general wear and tear on the blade.

5.Don't Miss a Service

You may see them as a nuisance or an annoying expense, but a full car service will save you money in the long term. All major items such as brake pads, filters and spark plugs are replaced to increase efficiency. This ultimately can maintain the value of your car.

6.Keep Your Car's Looks

This is probably the easiest of them all. From simply giving your vehicle a good clean inside and out, to getting any rust or dents repaired. You can transform your car back to its former glory in no time.
