Did media go overboard hyping Hurricane Irene? (AP)

NEW YORK ? The clouds from Hurricane Irene had barely dissipated before a chorus of critics began suggesting that television networks had gone overboard hyping the storm before and during its march up the East Coast.

For days, The Weather Channel and cable news networks reported on little else.

Ultimately, they were affected by the unpredictability that is the nature of tropical storms. Irene largely spared New York City, where much of the media attention had been focused, while causing significant damage in places where it was unanticipated: Who planned for torrents of water in Brattleboro, Vt.?

One media critic, Howard Kurtz, of The Daily Beast, called the coverage "a hurricane of hype."

Manhattan resident Josh Hull, who left his downtown home to ride out the storm with friends on the Upper East Side, said broadcasters blew the storm way out of proportion.

"I get that news is a business, but drumming up ratings at the expense of 28 million people is beyond the pale," Hull said. "My family, who all live in another part of the country, were worried sick all weekend while I slept right through the worst of it."

The coverage became more a form of entertainment and less of a public resource, said Lise King, a fellow at Harvard University.

"The two agendas cannot co-exist, as one serves to lead citizens into calm action and the other is meant, by nature, to drum up emotional responses in order to keep the viewer tuning in," she said.

Media organizations defended their coverage, in some cases angrily. NBC News anchor Brian Williams recalled talking to a meteorologist from The Weather Channel on Wednesday night and said he had "never heard him so dire." Networks took cues from public officials, like when New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered unprecedented evacuations and a full-scale public transportation shutdown in the nation's largest city.

Criticism that the coverage was overblown is the worst kind of Monday morning quarterbacking, said Phil Griffin, MSNBC chief executive.

"There's just an unpredictability about this stuff," Griffin said. "Suppose someone tells you there's a 1 in 10 chance you're going to have a tire blow out on your car. Are you going to drive home on it, or are you going to fix the tire? You're probably going to fix the tire."

The perception that the storm wasn't a bad one came because glass did not come flying down from skyscrapers onto the streets of Manhattan in high winds, he said. There's a much different perception in flood-ravaged New Jersey towns, for instance, or in the hundreds of thousands of homes without power.

Of course, where was the image of the storm created in the first place?

The Weather Channel began casting aside its regular schedule for near-constant storm updates three days before Irene's initial landfall on North Carolina. The network has more than 200 meteorologists on staff and worked hard to keep its coverage factual and precise, said Bob Walker, its executive vice president and general manager.

Irene wasn't downgraded to a tropical storm until Sunday morning, when it hit New York. If it had hit the city with the force of a category 1 or 2 hurricane, the damage there would have been much greater, Walker said.

What complicates matters, particularly for The Weather Channel, is that major stories such as impending hurricanes are great for business. With its focus on Irene, the network tripled its audience over the same time last year.

It's The Weather Channel, Walker said.

"Had we not been talking about a category 1 or 2 hurricane heading up the East Coast, we would not have been true to our mission," he said.

One television viewer, Brooklyn shirt designer Nechesa Morgan, said she had no problems with television reporting on the storm and preparations for it.

"My issue was how the media turned it into a 24-hour circus that just wouldn't end," she said.

Williams acknowledged that jumping on big stories to the near-exclusion of everything else is an ongoing issue for news networks: The weekend announcement that the U.S. had killed the No. 2 leader of al-Qaida drew relatively little attention amid the Irene coverage.

"That's something we struggle with, and that is an obvious casualty of wall-to-wall storm coverage," he said. "But people should remember that the news media did not evacuate lower Manhattan."

Like moist ocean air for a hurricane, politicians provided plenty of fuel for the networks. In the post-Katrina age, no amount of airtime for an officeholder aiming to look prepared for a potential crisis is too much. That's particularly true for those like Bloomberg, whose administration was criticized in the past for a slow response to a weather crisis (last year's post-Christmas blizzard).

Government officials and meteorologists are in a no-win situation, said Dave Orth, a network administrator from Pennsaulen, N.J.

"If they underplay it they get hammered, and if they overplay it they get hammered just the same," he said.

Many people are more willing to forgive too much attention than they would too little.

"I ended up with a few more packs of batteries than needed, and I'm pretty sure I will never have to buy a bottle of water again," said Victoria Perricon, an Internet entrepreneur from New York, "but I believe it's better to be well-prepared."

It's no help for the media's image that hurricane reports from the field have themselves become a subject for public mockery. One man in the background of a live Weather Channel report turned his back to the camera and pulled down his pants in a clip that received wide circulation online. There's also the unnerving feeling that some reporters wouldn't mind being blown to the ground if it offers street cred.

One Irene-related media criticism that may stick is a perceived New York-centric focus. It's the city where most media executives, personalities and their families live, and that's probably why personalities who wouldn't normally be involved in hurricane coverage ? Soledad O'Brien and Ali Velshi of CNN, for example ? took to city streets in raincoats.

Mike DeLucia, a New Haven, Conn., resident, said his state's problems were virtually ignored compared to New York's. News executives, though, noted the rarity of a hurricane that was predicted to pass right over the nation's most populous city was itself big news.

MSNBC's Griffin, for one, has no patience for second-guessers of hurricane coverage.

"It's a useless exercise," he said.

Pc Gaming | Forget Apple: Google Could Be A Viable Console ...

Written by Mike Deneen Sunday, 28 Aug 2011 12:00

A couple of things in the modern the public appear guaranteed: death, taxes, and someone essay about how Apple will be the next large firm to obtain in to console gaming.

Apple has already started their incursion in to gaming. The way up and unholy prevalence of the iPad has of course done it an popular choice for $1- $5 unintentional light games, together with providing a good stage to fool around Facebook games on. Google has usually not long ago entered both of these markets; both expanding the Android marketplace, and right away permitting for amicable gaming on Google+. But what about a Google console?

Raptr has an disdainful Grand Prize for people who follow GoozerNation as segment of their Summer of Raptr giveaway. Here are the sum on the Raptr promotion .

I am always astounded that no a brings up Google when speculating about other technology firm subsequent to Microsoft in to the console gaming world. we roughly never see any person speak of Google in this breath, notwithstanding the fact that they of course could and have done sufficient sound that it wouldn?t startle many if they did make that leap.

Google has been on a query to take over the world. They?re in send contest with Apple (Android OS), Facebook (Google+), Microsoft (Google finding engine, Chrome, Android OS, Google Docs, etc.) together with many other companies. Google has moreover not long ago acquired Motorola Mobility, expanding their mobile phone, Android bases and even presumably reviving GoogleTV. They?ve of course done well for themselves, and done sufficient sound (understatement of the century).

The Android marketplace has of course turn a force to be reckoned with as well. Many games are either forthcoming out on both iOS and Android, or forthcoming to Android first. Android tablets are increasingly apropos popular as well. Obviously, the phones have a wider accumulation than Apple, and have turn increasingly used by many, even in the corporate world. Amazon has even taken a large fascination in Android OS, with the foreword of the Amazon App Store for Android this year, featuring an form of Android apps, along with the giveaway Android app of the day.

Although quite speculative, since their rapid technological expansion, and widened recognition of their products, is it unequivocally too far of a widen to consternation if the Google sovereignty will place target on the console gaming world? It is an expanding market, notwithstanding the hard times for diversion developers. While mobile gaming is floating up similar to the bomb, console gaming is on the whole attainment in recognition quicker than bad reality television. Console gaming has vanished mainstream, and long past are the days when gaming was just for ?nerds.? This is a marketplace Google has to take a few fascination in, to a few degree. After all, a of their send competitors in other areas (Microsoft), is the ?King of the Hill? in console gaming at the present time, right away outselling the Wii in the North American market. Could Google home a more blow to its foe?

Google hasn?t been fearful to take risks in the past either, and not all of them successful. Before Google+ became a breakwater for those perplexing to elude Facebook, Google Buzz was introduced. This service famously had a engorgement of privacy regard issues, gap up calm a published on the web to everyone. Orkut was other amicable network disaster brought to us by Google. While a strike in such places as Brazil and India, Orkut never quite got its feet off the belligerent in the U.S., presumably due to its insufficient of marginal features. GoogleTV moreover launched final year, reception ?luke-warm? reviews at best. As quoted from Engadget, ?GoogleTV feels similar to an deficient jumble of good ideas usually half-realized, an unoptimized box of probability that suffers beneath the weight of its own aspiration and clearly rushed legal holiday deadline.? However, as proven via story by even great people similar to Thomas Edison, you have to make a series of failures before you obtain it right.

Keep in mind, Apple already had a console, albeit badly unsucessful. The Apple Bandai PipP!n (and we think the Wii U is a bad name?) was expelled in 1995. It retailed for $599.00 and lingered around for 2 years before Apple dropped the device. It sole reduction than 50,000 units.

Knowing this, however, Google is still a contender to come in the marketplace for two reasons. First, in the early 1990s console gaming was still at the back Personal Computer gaming. While the console was to start winning the gaming market, Personal Computer games had just introduced to a few of us the initial FPS games: Doom and Wolfenstein. It wouldn?t be until 1995 that, with the foreword of the PS1, that consoles would indeed start to transcend Personal Computer gaming. Secondly, Google has proven to be more longhorn headed, and more peaceful to take risks than Apple. Steve Jobs was instrumental in murdering many failures of Apple before they stayed around too long, or even attain the market. Google, however, has expelled many products that have failed, and still kept them around in hopes ?they would grasp on.?

There is moreover the regard of contest with OnLive. OnLive has not long ago usually gained attention due to its library of AAA titles; together with the liaison of GameStop employes stealing Deus Ex: Human Revolution codes from the sell Personal Computer chronicle of the game. Amongst other things, a of the leading setbacks for OnLive seems to be loiter issues, and problems with estimate games over clouded cover servers. Google, however, has the resources and manpower to put together this problem, as against to a firm who went by a engorgement of investors before launching.

Could it be a bona fide regard of the other companies to have other firm come in the gaming fold? Especially a firm who doesn?t appear to have outrageous black outlines on their record in more aged to Sony (PSNGate), Nintendo (The 3DS fiasco), or Microsoft (RROD issues). Google of course is in an expanded mindset, and has proven in the past that they are not fearful to take a few risks to be able to attain out to new markets. Google definately has the money, its just a subject if they have the will. Especially with Nintendo and Sony having unsure reception in the United States lately, this could be the well-timed short time for Google to strike and spread their sovereignty in to video diversion hardware.

EMMC's chief nursing officer resigns ? Health & Fitness ? Bangor ...

BANGOR, Maine ? One of the officials who served as a hospital spokeswoman in recent contract negotiations between Eastern Maine Medical Center and its nurses union has resigned after a nearly three-decade career at the Bangor hospital.

Lorraine Rodgerson, the hospital?s vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer, left her position effective immediately, an EMMC official confirmed Monday.

?We are grateful for Lorraine?s commitment and service to EMMC and our region?s patients during her 29-year career at our organization,? Greg Howat, vice president for human resources, said in a statement released Monday afternoon.

Howat said that Lisa Swanson, EMMC?s organizational excellence officer, has been appointed chief nursing officer and will provide direction and support to nursing at EMMC.

?Community members can be assured EMMC is committed to working with our nurses and all staff to deliver the high-quality care our patients have come to expect,? Howat said.

No reason was given for Rodgerson?s resignation.

Rodgerson was one of the hospital officials involved in recent contract negotiations between EMMC and members of the Maine State Nurses Association and National Nurses United. Relations between the hospital and the union have been rocky for several years, including the past year, which saw a strike in November and a near strike planned for early May.

The proposed second strike was averted days before its was scheduled to start when the two sides struck accord on a one-year contract that addressed some of the sticking points that had been dividing them.

Some of the issues put to rest were the handling of transfers of nurses among departments, the workload for charge nurses and health benefits. Not addressed were staffing ratios, which nurses said was a major issue.

Vanessa Sylvester of the MSNA said that unionized nurses were aware of Rodgerson?s but did not plan to comment on the matter on Monday.

Judy Brown, president of the nurses union at EMMC, was not available for comment Monday.

Poll: Ron Paul Has Best Chance to Beat Obama? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | It wasn't too long ago that libertarian Texas Congressman Ron Paul was being ignored by CNN and Fox News -- let's face it, Jon Stewart pointed out how little attention the legislator was receiving from most of the major media outlets -- as he fought to be heard above the sound bites of Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas governor Rick Perry, and undeclared media magnet Sarah Palin. But all that changed when national attention focused on the fact that national attention had not been focused anywhere near the campaign of the just-turned 76-year-old legislator. And not even two weeks later, a Rasmussen Reports poll indicates that it is he, not newcomer Perry, or firebrand Bachmann, or even the stoic and steady Mitt Romney, that stands the best chance of defeating President Obama in the national election.

It is amazing the effect a little attention can cause...

According to the survey, not one of the Republican contenders for the GOP nomination at present has the numbers to beat the incumbent president. Congressman Paul, however, is the closest, trailing only 39 percent to 38 percent, and is positioned well within the margin of error of the survey (which is +/-3 percent). Even Perry, who leads in the national polls by double digits over his GOP colleagues, falls short of Obama by three percent (40 percent to Obama's 43 percent).

Other candidates are within striking distance of an victory over Obama as well. Tea party leader Michele Bachmann polls just behind Perry with a 43 percent to 39 percent loss to the president. Former Massachusetts governor and previous national poll leader (for nearly three months) Mitt Romney fares the worst among the GOP frontrunners, although he remains fairly close (38 percent to Obama's 46 percent).

Paul seems to have gotten a Jon Stewart bump, so to speak. But is that all that may have precipitated his rise in the estimation of Republican voters, a little media attention? Perhaps the increasing dictatorial proclamations of Minnesota Congressman Bachmann -- she promises to dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency, drop gas prices to $2, and most recently threatened to disband the National Labor Relations Board -- have purchase Paul increased credibility among the GOP contenders. He might have gotten an extra boost from the increasing negative press being meted out to Perry as he has taken a brazenly anti-intellectual stance to governance. And perhaps the Congressman has been helped along by Romney's seeming inability to stir up enthusiasm among Republicans.

And there is the possibility that all the media attention afforded the Texas lawmaker may have driven Republicans to take his candidacy seriously and become informed on Paul's policy positions, voting record, and vision. A no-nonsense fiscal conservative, Paul was a proponent of tea party tenets long before the likes of Bachmann and Palin attached themselves to the movement. He has long been an adversary to wasteful spending policies and has stood firmly against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Whatever the reason, Paul, who just two weeks ago could not even get his name mentioned as a frontrunner even after placed 152 votes out of first place in the much touted Ames Straw Poll in Iowa, has become a major political player and presidential contender in the race for the 2012 Republican nomination. And if one were to think the Rasmussen Reports survey a canvassing fluke, it should be pointed out that Congressman Paul polled just two points short of President Obama in a recent Gallup Poll as well.

Insight: Jobs exit opens door for nimble Apple rivals (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO/SEOUL (Reuters) ? The changing of the guard at Apple Inc gives rivals from Google Inc to Microsoft Corp and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd an unprecedented opportunity to take on the consumer electronics powerhouse.

Steve Jobs passed the reins at Apple to his right-hand man Tim Cook on Wednesday, saying he could no longer fulfill his CEO duties.

Technology executives around the world praised Jobs' skills as an innovator and a business leader, but as the dust settles, industry insiders and analysts expect his departure to ratchet up the competition as rivals look for fresh opportunities.

"What this will do is clearly embolden the competitors, because a lot of them think they just can't compete with Steve Jobs," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst with the Enderle Group, whose clients include Apple rivals such as Microsoft, Lenovo and Dell.

As tech companies step up efforts to chip away at Apple's strongholds in consumer electronics, PCs and entertainment, the company will also have to defend its internal ranks from outsiders looking to lure away its top talent.

"Companies lose a lot of their aggressiveness, their culture, their sense of purpose, when the founder steps down," said Michael Cusumano, a professor at MIT Sloan School of Management.

But he said competitors may not be able to truly benefit from the change at Apple for a couple of years. Cook has effectively been running the company since January -- a period during which Apple has thrived. And Jobs, known for his obsessive attention to detail, intends to remain active in his new chairman's role for as long as his health allows.

What's more, analysts say, Apple likely already has a full pipeline of Jobs-grade products that should see it through the next few years.

GREENER PASTURES

Apple's biggest vulnerability in the short term may be its employees. Companies such as Google, whose chief executive Larry Page co-founded the company and is an outspoken advocate of investment in research and innovation, could prove particularly appealing to Apple engineers.

Even Apple nemesis Microsoft may appeal to some Apple employees thanks to efforts such as its xBox video game business, which has many parallels to the media-centric devices made by Apple, noted Mike McGuire, an analyst at industry research firm Gartner.

"These executives inside Apple are some of the most sought after executives in the industry," said one Internet executive who wished to remain anonymous.

If Jobs' influence wanes, many employees may no longer feel as passionately about working for Apple. Others may simply find it tough to resist the promise of a hefty raise or a promotion at a rival company.

"It would shock me if people didn't leave within a year, or six months," said the Internet executive.

Overall though, Apple's culture and work environment are so unique that convincing its employees to leave will be tougher than it seems, said McGuire.

"I'm sure there are lot of those big head-hunting firms who have got their execs booking flights and trying to figure out how they can get involved but I think a lot of them are going to be disappointed," he said.

RISING CHALLENGERS

Jobs' decision to step down comes as Apple is on a roll, with the company delivering blockbuster financial results and Apple challenging ExxonMobil for the title of America's most valuable company.

Last week, Hewlett-Packard Co effectively conceded that it couldn't compete with Apple's iPad and iPhones and pulled the plug on its nascent business producing tablets and smartphones.

But other companies are ramping up efforts. Google's recent move to acquire Motorola Mobility signals the Web search giant's plans to challenge Apple's iPhone more directly by selling its own, home-built smartphones.

Samsung and HTC, which use Google's Android software, are also gaining share in the mobile market.

"Even before Steve Jobs' (resignation), Samsung was getting more and more optimistic that they can actually take on Apple in the smartphone arena," said Mark Newman, a former director of strategy at Samsung, where he worked for six years.

"The game is really now Samsung's to lose ... They are picking up market share because of the change in dynamics in the smartphone industry," added Newman, now a senior analyst for global memory and consumer electronics at Sanford C Bernstein.

Samsung's Galaxy range of smartphones and tablet computers running on Google's Android operating system are seen as the key competitors to Apple's iPhone and iPad, products that have changed the industry.

Taiwanese group HTC Corp -- led by another well-known industry figure, Peter Chou -- has seen sales of its handsets surge in the last few quarters and has a reputation for innovative flair.

"Next year is probably going to be the heaviest competition year Apple has ever had," said Enderle.

But with the intensifying competition, some industry insiders believe the only way rivals will truly get a leg up on Apple will be if Apple stumbles.

"It's all about if Apple at some point makes a significantly bad decision," said Georges Nahon, the CEO at Orange Labs, a division of France Telecom SA.

"It has to be the convergence of a couple bad decisions internally and major changes happening in the market that they didn't see coming," he said.

Classical Economics And Its Religious ... - World news and information

I spent a couple of days in a TV studio recently, recording a series of short teaching sessions on the basic principles of classical economics and how they apply to investments. Since the idea of God was integral to the founders of classical economics, and the firm which requested the series was sympathetic to that idea, I spent time reading Jacob Viner?s unfinished book, Providence and the Social Order in preparation for the project.

Viner was a professor of economics at the University of Chicago and taught, among others, the great Milton Friedman. Some of Viner?s colleagues at Chicago believed that he had read more economic history than any man ever had. Viner had a life-long interest in writing about the theological roots of modern free-market economics, but because there was little interest in the topic among economists in the mid-20th Century he put the project off for most of his life.? Eventually he was able to start to write on this topic, but by then it proved to be too late for him to finish it before his death.

After several decades of research, Viner concluded that Smith was an example of a strand of thought which he called ?optimistic providentialism.?? This view goes back to the early Christian church fathers, as far back as the time of St. Augustine. It grew to eventually become popular in intellectual circles at the time of Smith.? Viner pointed to the extremely important idea he dubbed ?providential abundance,? which held that the universe was designed by God to be abundant. The necessities of life were widely distributed by Him, and even the luxuries of life could be had when free people are allowed to pursue self-interest. Man, being in possession of free will, could waste and squander opportunity through plunder, war and empire, but those were not the original design. Frederick Bastiat develops this idea more fully in Economic Harmonies, arguing that peaceful labor and abundance was the Edenic intention, but that there had arisen a ?misunderstanding between God and mankind,? in which the latter chose the path of coercion.

According to Bastiat, the laws of economics are much like the laws of physics, in that they are rational and inviolable and reflections of the mind of God. But in some sense they are even more remarkable in that they involve the meshing of elements, which unlike those of nature, are sentient.

Let us not thus condemn mankind until we have studied its laws, forces, energies, and tendencies. Newton, after he had discovered the law of gravity, never spoke the name of God without uncovering his head. As far as intellect is above matter, so far is the social world above the physical universe that Newton revered; for the celestial?mechanism is unaware of the laws it obeys. How much more reason, then, do we have to bow before the Eternal Wisdom as we contemplate the mechanism of the social world in which the universal mind of God also resides (mens agitat molem)? But with the difference that the social world presents an additional and stupendous phenomenon: its every atom is an animate, thinking being endowed with that marvelous energy, that source of all morality, of all dignity, of all progress, that exclusive attribute of man ? freedom!

Bastiat argues that the virtue of the doctrine of providential economic harmony is that it is simple, but that its simplicity also makes it vulnerable. The friend of liberty reminds us of this simple truth over and over, that God created the world with a plan that free individuals pursuing peaceful commerce would be of benefit to all. The enemy of liberty, on the other hand, never ceases dreaming up new ideas for the reordering of society, sitting in their studies scribbling promises to the masses which will never come to fruition. But each promise which offers paradise in exchange for surrendered liberties weakens the desire for liberty. Socialists, Bastiat said, have the advantage of always being able to think up something new and allegedly improved.

The newness, the fashionableness of statist schemes is a problem for the classical view, but it seems that the erosion of the belief in God may have been more of one. When modern economics attempted to gain scientific legitimacy by jettisoning the idea of God and, eventually, any fixed principle at all, in some sense it cut off the limb on which it was sitting. The idea of providential abundance was extremely important to the defense of the market order. God made a world which is fit for us, and He made us fit for the world. Resources are abundant and responsive to our touch. To use a modern analogy, commerce and technology work so well because we run on the same software, the mind of God.? Man and nature are, therefore, compatible because we have the same designer.

When the modern mind shifted away from a designed world to one governed by blind, evolutionary processes, the classical free-market consensus began to erode. Yes, there were a few social Darwinists who used the analogy of natural selection to explain market processes. But for every nearly forgotten Herbert Spencer who tried to rebuild a free-market public consensus on survival of the fittest, there were more Marxes, Engels, Shaws and Keynes who were more gifted propagandists and more ambitious candidates for the newly vacated office of god-man. The planless masses refused to live without a plan from above. If God were taken from them, they? would be given a plan by a new class of planners. Whether fairly or not, the men who used Darwin to sell socialism to the world, were far more successful than those who used him to sell freedom.

Classical economics was well into its second century before leaving God behind. Was it right to do so, or is He, as Smith and Bastiat and many others seemed to believe, foundational to the free-market order?

Benefits of Purchasing Real Estate in Cyprus | Real Estate Buying

People concerned about the benefits of purchasing Real Estate in Cyprus as an investment will be pleased to learn that an article in The Independant (February 2011) reported ?Tourism revenues in Cyprus rose 3.8 percent in 2010, official data showed on Monday, boosting confidence of an economic recovery in the EU member state. Revenue for January to December 2010 reached 1.54 billion euros ($2.1 billion) compared with 1.49 billion euros for 2009. Income from tourism accounts for nearly 12 percent of gross domestic product of the holiday island. It is the first rise in income from tourism since 2007 when tourism yielded 1.85 billion euros, despite December?s severe weather across Europe curtailing arrivals. In December, tourists spent 40.9 million euros in Cyprus ? 4.2 percent less than the 42.7 million euros they brought in to the Cypriot economy in December 2009. The recession-hit Irish were the biggest spenders at an average 153.2 euros per day, while the Danes were the most frugal, spending just 30.4 euros. So despite rumours to the contrary, now is a very favourable time to invest in Cyprus Properties.

Food & Drink | Soda Bad, Chocolate Good :: By Brad Brubaker ...

Got a sweet tooth? Be careful what you eat or drink to sate it. Recent health research has good news for chocolate lovers and bad news for soda drinkers.

A collaborative observational study between the University of Minnesota and the University of Singapore examined 60,000 Chinese Singaporeans, all of them middle-aged or older. Over 14 years, scientists examined the participants' intake of juice and soda and charted development of pancreatic cancer in those subjects. People who drank more than two sodas a week on average were 87% more likely to develop a pancreatic tumor than those who didn't consume any. There was no increased risk for juice drinkers; researchers speculate that this is due to the effect that sugared sodas have on glucose and insulin levels, which don't spike as much from natural sugars found in fruit juices.

This was the first time an Asian population was examined in observational studies of such a correlation, but researchers believe the results can be extrapolated to Western populations, particularly the United States. Singapore and the U.S. both consume relatively large amounts of fast food and refined sugars. Doctors do caution, though, that this doesn't establish any clear causal link between sodas and pancreatic cancer, and may simply be a further illustration of the correlation between development of pancreatic cancer and the incidence rates of diabetes and obesity.

Meanwhile, the Stroke Research Center at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, Canada has found that eating chocolate - dark chocolate in particular - may reduce your risk of stroke. The researchers' final findings have not yet been published, but they are slated to deliver their review at a Canadian neurology conference in April. The scientists didn't delve much into their findings comparing intake effects of white chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate, but did mention that dark chocolate seemed most beneficial. The review estimates that stroke rate was 22% lower for people who ate chocolate once a week; in those who ate 50 grams or more weekly, stroke rate was as much as 46% lower. The researchers admit that a limitation of bias may be at work in these findings. People who ate larger amounts of chocolates could just be more affluent and wealthy, with better access to medical care and more opportunities to be physically active.

The noted benefits may be the result of flavonoid antioxidants in chocolate, which is found in higher concentrations in dark chocolate than milk chocolate. However, chocolate is also a food that is high in saturated fat and bad cholesterol. While none of the doctors are recommending we think of chocolate as a health food, moderate intake certainly doesn't seem to be bad for you. If all it takes is one weekly serving to reduce your risk of stroke, that's a sweet change that anyone's calorie allotment can make room for - just lay off the sodas for a while, and have a Special Dark instead. Your body may even thank you for the indulgence in the long run.

Vertical platform lifts are devices that are used by mobility challenged individuals to ascend or descend different areas of elevation. They generally affix to the ground and raise a small platform, which can hold electric power wheelchairs and mobility scooters, vertically over distances that can reach over 12 feet. They are basically a personal elevator that does not require its own shaft, and is for the most part fairly straightforward to install. Since they are commonly installed on ones...

Sunspot prediction method improved | technology4all news sharing

Number of View: 5

line

Washington ? Scientists said they can now better predict when sunspots will erupt, offering earlier warning of magnetic disruptions that can cut power and interrupt communications on Earth.

The advance means astronomers will be able to know a day or two in advance when potent sunspots are expected to arise, sharpening the precision of current space weather forecasts, said the study published in the US journal Science on Thursday.

The new technique could be useful in the coming years, as astronomers study what is expected to be an increase in solar activity around 2012, though some scientists have predicted the solar maximum will be delayed.

The international team of researchers, led by Stanford University physicist Stathis Ilonidis, said data from a joint Nasa and European Space Agency project known as the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory has led to the breakthrough.

Potent energy bursts known as sunspots begin with magnetic fields deep inside the Sun, as many as 65 000km below the surface, it said.

Solar activity

Doppler observations from the observatory have shown that these forces are ?much stronger than previous models had predicted?, said the study.

The magnetic forces ?travel from the Sun?s interior at speeds between 0.19 and 0.37 miles per second [0.3 to 0.6 kilometres per second]?.

The new technique allows scientists to see images of big sunspots as they form, and before they appear on the Sun?s surface.

?Strong emerging flux events can now be anticipated one to two days in advance,? said the study.

Solar activity tends to rise and fall every 11 years or so. The solar maximum and solar minimum each mark about half the interval of the magnetic pole reversal on the Sun, which happens every 22 years.

Solar flares and eruptions can send highly charged particles hurtling toward Earth and interfere with satellite communications, GPS systems and even airline controls.

Geomagnetic forces have been known to occasionally garble the world?s modern gadgetry, and warnings were issued as recently as June when a moderate solar flare sent a fiery coronal mass ejection in the Earth?s direction.

PFT: Broncos' Bruton hospitalized with head injury

Pierre Thomas, Mario WilliamsAP

America?s favorite running segment quickly summarizing preseason games is back. ?Check out Thursday and Friday?s ?what we learned? or go back to Week One of the preseason if you dare.

Texans 27, Saints 14

1. Houston?s offense absolutely steamrolled New Orleans? vanilla-looking group. (The two teams play again in Week Three.) ?Arian Foster and Ben Tate look plenty healthy running the ball.

2. The Saints lost free agent pickup Aubrayo Franklin to a sprained MCL.

3. The play of Saints undrafted rookie receiver Joe Morgan is becoming hard to ignore.

4. Mario Williams showed improvement in his second game at outside linebacker.

49ers 17, Raiders 3

1. Alex Smith moved the ball better this time around with some long drives, but the 49ers starters only scored three points. ?Rookie backup Colin Kaepernick looked solid as well, but Smith looks locked into the starting job.

2. Jason Campbell left the game early and was tested for a concussion after. ?Oakland?s offense has struggled in all facets in two preseason games.

3. 49ers rookie Kendall Hunter hasn?t overly impressed in camp, but?he was dynamic last night. The kid has rare speed and terrific moves in the open field. If Hunter can pass protect, he should get a lot of run behind Frank Gore.

4. Braylon Edwards made a big impact with a beautiful long catch. With Michael Crabtree hurt, Edwards was a key pickup.

Rams 17, Titans 16

1. Except for a 83-yard score to Brandon Gibson on a blown coverage early, Sam Bradford and the Rams starting offese struggled. ?It was 16-7 Titans at halftime.

2. Matt Hasselbeck left the game early, but it wasn?t a serious injury. ?Jake Locker once again looked promising in relief, but not so promising that he should be starting. Locker was inaccurate on a number of throws.

It?s been a nice preseason overall for both Titans quarterbacks.

3. No one really stepped up in the Rams receiver battle. Gibson looks like the No. 1 guy at the moment and it?s unclear after that.

Broncos 24, Bills 10

1. Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn both?looked sharp for the Broncos. Tim Tebow barely played.

2. Willis McGahee looks a little revived in Denver. The Broncos have been effective running in both preseason games, with McGahee back to his role as touchdown vulture.

3. Buffalo?s offensive line was overmatched, especially left tackle Demetrius Bell.

4. Really, there wasn?t a lot of positives for the Bills. ?C.J. Spiller didn?t show he was worthy of starting. Running back Johnny White and wide receiver Donald Jones both left after taking nasty hits.

Vikings 20, Seahawks 7

1. Tarvaris Jackson didn?t look great, but Seattle?s offensive line was the real problem Saturday night.

2. Seahawks fans (and Lawyer Milloy) are straining to see Charlie Whitehurst as the answer. ?His YPA is under 5.5 in two outings. ?This preseason hasn?t told us much.

3. Minnesota?s short passing game was pretty effective under Donovan McNabb. ?Rookie Christian Ponder looked like a rookie again. We?re not sure if he?s much ahead of Joe Webb at this point, if at all.

A Wireless Communications System That Works When Cell Phones ...

A friend posted this on Facebook - thought could be useful for others to read/investigate?!

warm wishes to all

julia?

LifeNet lets computers and phones talk to each other without an Internet connection, which could come in handy after disasters that knock out communication networks.

rescue

One of the first things to disappear in the wake of a major disaster is reliable communication. Without access to cell phone service or the Internet, it's difficult for first responders--or anyone who wants to help out--to speak with each other. And while satellite phones work in these situations, they're too expensive for many first responder organizations to purchase en masse. Now researchers from Georgia Tech College of Computing claim to have developed a cheap, easy solution:?LifeNet, a piece of software that allows people to communicate after disasters, even if landlines, cell phone networks, and the Internet are all down.

"It's just a piece of code that you can have on your laptop or phone. Once you have the software, the computers can communicate with each other, and you don't need infrastructure," says Santosh Vempala, the Georgia Tech computer science professor in charge of the project.

Any device that has LifeNet installed acts as both a host and router for the network--meaning the software can route data both to and from any other LifeNet-enabled device. You can read more technical details?here.

A group of people using the software can all communicate with each other (texting is the easiest way), but if even one person on the network has access to the Internet, everyone else can access it, too--though the connection probably wouldnt be strong enough to do any powerful surfing, like stream video. And if one user has a satellite phone, the whole network can use its services.

There's just one catch: Users have to be within range of each other. Outdoors, this could mean up to a kilometer. Indoors, users may have to be as close as a few hundred yards. But as Vempala notes, "you could have a line of people on this network that are spaced 100 yards apart, and the line could go as long as you want."

Hrushikesh Mehendale, one of Vempala's former graduate students, plans to bring LifeNet to market. The software will be free, he says, but users will have to pay for specific applications (i.e text messaging). Still, the cost will be cheap compared to satellite phones, which cost up to $600 a pop and charge 50 cents per text.

Vempala and Mehendale have already tested LifeNet with the FAA, which found that it was able to run all of its operations on top of the network. The researchers also recently partnered with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in India, which will help deploy the service in communications-poor areas that have been hit hard by recent cyclones.

And the software isn't just useful in disaster situations. It could also be used in any region that lacks a reliable communications infrastructure. "The next thing is to get real users. We plan to find critical scenarios where we identify real need," says Mehendale.

"The track is almost complete, final touch is being given," he added.

In the first phase, the tickets are available at web portal BookMyShow.com and in the second phase, they will be made available at different outlets across the country including in metros and tier-two cities.

"The second phase of the ticket selling would commence in about 10 days. There has not been any percentage of tickets reserved for the second phase but it all depends on the demand and response that we get from the customers," Gaur said.

The total seating capacity of the venue is about 1.2 lakh.

Speaking about the facilities, Gaur said each seating zone has dedicated parking lots and bus terminals and one can have one parking permit on purchase of three tickets.

Talking about the acceptance of F1 as a sport in a cricket-mad country like India, Karun Chandhok, India's Formula One racing driver, who was also present on the occasion, said: "We all grew up as cricket fans, nothing will out-take cricket. We are not trying to compete. It is something we have to wait and see."

Speaking on the occasion, Narain Karthikeyan, India's first Formula One racing driver, said: "F1 has been on TV since 1993, people do relate to big names like Michael Schumacher. In India I believe it is going to be full house."

On the talks of setting up an F1 training academy, Karthikeyan said: "We made it here the hard way... for young drivers it should be a little easier."

John Antioco named head of Rave Cinemas (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Former Blockbuster chairman and CEO John Antioco has been tapped to head Rave Cinemas, the company announced Wednesday, succeeding Charles B. Moss as the company's chairman on September 19.

Moss, who is the theater chain's second largest investor, will remain on the company's board of directors.

"Rave is well positioned to continue leading innovation in the industry, and I am looking forward to working closely with Rolando and his team," Antioco said.

Antioco left Blockbuster in 2007, before the company shuffled off into bankruptcy last year and was later auctioned off to Dish Network.

Though the company's revenue grew substantially, his tenure at the company was a rocky one. After losing a 2005 proxy fight to Carl Icahn, the Blockbuster chief and the activist investor clashed frequently over the direction of the company.

Though Blockbuster remains his most prominent former landing spot, Antioco also spent 20 years at 7-Eleven, where he rose to be the convenience-store chain's senior vice president, responsible for all store operations worldwide.

4 Things You Should Never Tell Your Boyfriend | Love Relationships ...

Whoever told you that you have to divulge everything about yourself once you begin a serious relationship told you wrong. Yes, you are a couple and he may have told you what you believe are his deepest darkest secrets but your relationship stands a better chance if you keep some things private. Another reason that you should keep quiet is that some of the things you tell might be downright hurtful and cause strain in the relationship. Here are five things that you should never tell your man.

1. Past Relationships

Although you will no doubt share some details about past relationships that were serious you should not go telling him about all your hookups or one night stands. There is no need for him to know all the details of your sexual past to paint images in his mind. If he persists and wants to know let him know that your past is your past and that you would like to focus on him and the future that you have together.? For this to work you must be just as willing to block out his past because if you expect him to reveal his you will be expected to reveal yours.

4 Things You Should Never Tell Your Boyfriend

2. The Way You Allocate Your Funds
If you do not share a joint account there is no need for your boyfriend to know where your money goes. He might be curious and very worried about how you manage your finances especially if he sees you purchasing a lot of unnecessary things. To avoid the strain that could result assure your boyfriend that have a budget that you stick to it and that if there are any problems you would request his help.

3. How You Feel About His Family
Your boyfriend comes as a package deal with his family. You take him you take them no matter how mean and obnoxious they are. Of course there are times when you really need to vent but don?t vent to him or in his presence, seek an outside source. When you start complaining about his family to him he will begin feeling torn between the both sides and frankly you might lose. Keep your thoughts to yourself and whenever you have to be around them show respect.

4. What You Really Think of His Gift
Gift giving can really be a challenge for the best of us and it is especially challenging for men. Some men can pick a perfect gift every single time but others who don?t have a clue can really mess up. If you guy gives a gift that is less than thrilling don?t tell him that you hate it. Instead you should find something that you like about the gift (it might be thought) and tell him how much you appreciate it in words and in expression. By rejecting his gift you are rejecting him so be careful what you say. As a future solution drop obvious hints of perfect gifts and see how well he responds.
