Microsoft offered to help Fez dev over patch costs

Xbox 360 platform holder Microsoft has responded to the thinly veiled criticism it has received from Fez developer Polytron regarding the game?s controversial patch.

The game?s lead developer Phil Fish hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons last week after stating that his company would not be fixing a fundamental bug in Fez due to the prohibitive cots of patching an XBLA title.

And aside from the criticism Fish himself had to endure, fingers were also pointed at Microsoft for its role in the saga.

But now the company has gone on record to say that it did offer the developers a helping hand.

?Polytron and their investor, Trapdoor, made the decision not to work on an additional title update for Fez,? a statement issued to Kotaku read. ?Microsoft Studios chose to support this decision based on the belief that Polytron/Trapdoor were in the best position to determine what the acceptable quality level is for their game.

?While we do not disclose the cost of Title Updates, we did offer to work with Trapdoor to make sure that wasn't a blocking issue. We remain huge fans of Fez.?

Oracle Digital Exposes the Power of Online PR in Web ... - SEO

Leading Internet marketing firm explains how online Press Releases can significantly increase brand awareness and profitability for businesses.

Oracle Digital, one of the top web marketing firms in Australia, has revealed how using an online Press Release can powerfully increase the brand awareness for businesses, which can result in attracting a wider target market and more profitability in the long run.Press Release

This proclamation from the company is in connection with new reports showing how online PR is achieving such positive impacts, in light of the numerous benefits it brings to those businesses that utilise it.

According to experts, the primary purpose of a press release is to generate buzz about a company or product, and to create a lasting impression to industry leaders, as well as to consumers. In effect, the purpose of an online PR is to create awareness about a particular brand or product, spark consumers? interest, and build a consistent following.

With the wide popularity of the Internet and web marketing tools such as Search Engine Optimisation and social media, the importance of PR for businesses has become even more apparent. And as attested to by industry experts, a combination of efficient web marketing strategies and an effective PR campaign will do wonders for any business whether large or small.

Business professionals also added that being mentioned inside major media outlets is a good strategy ? having their business news and website links included in an online media authority will bring a raft of benefits, such as higher search engine rankings and a direct increase in sales enquiries.

Unfortunately, despite the numerous advantages that this promotional strategy brings ? not all businesses have shown a keen interest in including it in their business marketing plans. And industry experts emphasised that this is a prevailing mistake that may eventually take it?s toll on a business, in light of how the current Google crackdown on quality content and links has brought the rankings of business websites under the microscope in recent times.

Many experts reiterate the importance of online PR ? combined with an active social media campaign and the right SEO methods to achieve overall success.

This is the same view shared by James Corby, Oracle Digital?s Business Development Director. He said, ?Online PR is indispensable to the business world right now. After all, it helps create greater brand awareness, a sustainable online presence and a bigger impact both in the virtual and real world.?

Corby then added, ?I am really surprised as to why there are still businesses who choose not to use advanced promotional and marketing strategies, when online PR and Internet marketing has already been proven to be the most profitable and cost effective marketing platform in modern times.?

Oracle Digital is a leading Perth Internet marketing and SEO company that offers numerous services, ranging from SEO, web marketing, reputation management and other useful tools. They also offer Online Press Release Services to assist their clients in gaining the upper hand over their competitors.

A clueless hostess will bankrupt your business -keynote speaker ...

Micah Solomon Keynote speech (video)

Receptionist. Host/hostess. Greeter?

?In many businesses, it?s the front desk receptionist, the hostess, or another human greeter who welcomes and bids farewell to visitors, whether in person, on the telephone, or via email.

So, it?s crucial that the person in this position convey a warm welcome when customers arrive and a gracious, heartfelt farewell when they leave; the handling of these two moments is key to your brand?s image. This is why inbound and outbound reception is best handled by a skilled, trained, and motivated veteran with great customer-focused traits.

And yet, company after company treats reception as an entry-level, stepping-stone position.?

This approach is, inevitably, a slow-motion business catastrophe.? Because, whatever you call it, ??First and Last Impression Creator?? is among the most important positions in your enterprise.

Colo. shootings prompt campaigns to scuttle plans

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The deadly shootings at a movie theater in Colorado have briefly silenced the presidential campaign, prompting both President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to cut short their schedules and pull advertising in the state out of respect for the victims and their families.

Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address that he hopes everyone takes time this weekend "for prayer and reflection ? for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."

The president said Americans should also think about "all the victims of the less publicized acts of violence that plague our communities on a daily basis. Let us keep all these Americans in our prayers."

Obama and Romney used campaign appearances on Friday to focus attention on the need for national unity in the aftermath of the shootings in Aurora, which killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others. Their campaign teams rescheduled Sunday show appearances by top aides and surrogates, essentially providing a break in what has been an increasingly testy campaign.

The rampage injected a new tone into the campaign after Obama and Romney had clashed repeatedly over the economy, Medicare and tax returns.

Obama was set to start his second day of events in Florida when the shootings occurred, prompting his team to address the violence at a previously scheduled rally in Fort Myers, Fla., and scrapping an event in suburban Orlando. Obama told supporters in Fort Myers that the shootings served as a "reminder that life is very fragile."

"Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it's not the trivial things," he said. "Ultimately, it's how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another."

Romney echoed Obama's call for unity, saying at a previously scheduled event in Bow, N.H., that he joined with the president and first lady in offering condolences for those "whose lives were shattered in a few moments, a few moments of evil in Colorado."

"The answer is that we can come together. We will show our fellow citizens the good heart of the America we know and love," Romney said.

Other prominent lawmakers called the shootings a time for unity. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in the Republican address Saturday that lawmakers joined Obama in offering condolences and prayers to the loved ones of those who were killed and wounded.

"I know that when confronted with evil we cannot comprehend, Americans pull together and embrace our national family more tightly," Boehner said.

Yet, beyond the calls for a higher purpose, the shootings could raise the profile of gun rights in the presidential campaign, an issue which has played a minor role so far.

As a senator Obama voted to leave gun makers and dealers open to civil lawsuits, and as an Illinois state lawmaker he supported a ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms.

Following the killing of six people and wounding of then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011, Obama called for a series of steps to "keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place."

Among those steps was a better federal background check system. The administration said Friday that it has indeed improved the amount and quality of information poured into that system, allowing background checks to be more thorough.

But the administration has offered no detailed, public explanation of how it is following up on all of Obama's previous promises, and it had no comment about any need for new legislation.

"The president believes that we need to take common-sense measures that protect Second Amendment rights of Americans, while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing law do not get them," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.

Romney backed some gun control measures when he was governor of Massachusetts. When he challenged Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in 1994 he declared, "I don't line up with the NRA." In April, Romney told the National Rifle Association he was a guardian of the Second Amendment.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the Republican candidate believes that the "best way to prevent gun violence is to vigorously enforce our laws."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a radio interview, urged the president and his challenger to address gun violence forcefully.

"You know, soothing words are nice," Bloomberg said, "but maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country."

First lady to lead new campaign mobilizing effort

First lady Michelle Obama accompanied by Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker, left, and other elected officials speaks during an event to discuss her Let's Move! initiative to combat childhood obesity, at the Lenfest Police Athletic (PAL) Center, Wednesday, July 18, 2012, in Philadelphia (AP Photo/Matt Rourke)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Taking on a more prominent political role, first lady Michelle Obama is launching a nationwide effort to motivate every supporter of President Barack Obama to get more involved in his re-election campaign ? and bring along somebody else, too.

The "It Takes One" program urges supporters to make a difference in this election, and to "start by taking one action that will help grow our campaign," Mrs. Obama says. In a three-minute video message to supporters that was released Thursday, the first lady tells supporters that with a tighter election than 2008 likely this fall, "in the end, it could all come down to those last few thousand votes in a single state."

"Every time you take action to move this country forward, we're asking you to inspire one more person to join you as well," she says. "That could be the difference between waking up on Nov. 7 and feeling the promise of four more years or asking yourself, 'Could I have done more?'"

The video opens with Mrs. Obama recalling her husband's first campaign for the Illinois legislature, when the newly married couple would take friends along when they went out to collect petition signatures to get Obama on the ballot.

"Help one new voter get registered through GottaVote.org, recruit one more volunteer, or bring a friend to the next phone bank you attend," Mrs. Obama says. "If we all commit to finding at least one way to make an impact, we can ensure that we'll keep moving this country forward for another four years."

The Obama campaign said Mrs. Obama would lead the "It Takes One" effort, which will include digital media, advertising and grassroots organizing. Campaign officials said Mrs. Obama would be the face of the effort and personally participate in many "It Takes One" events as she travels the country, recruiting neighborhood team leaders, speaking to groups of women to ask them to volunteer and stopping by voter registration events.

That represents a significant increase in the first lady's role in the campaign. Already, she has been traveling the country to raise money for the campaign and making appearances at rallies designed to energize volunteers and supporters.

Mrs. Obama, whose high favorability ratings are a big asset to the campaign, was known during the 2008 presidential race as "the closer" for her ability to persuade undecided voters to come on board and her success at motivating supporters to get more involved.

The first lady planned to formally launch the "It Takes One" program during campaign stops Friday in Virginia, a battleground state in this fall's election. The first lady will speak at a campaign event for women in Charlottesville and to grassroots supporters in Fredericksburg.

Obama's campaign also plans to launch local "It Takes One" efforts in battleground states to engage new volunteers.

As Romney campaign expands, focus is on loyalty

BOSTON (AP) ? One word defines Mitt Romney's inner circle: loyal.

For years, the GOP presidential candidate has stuck with a core team of advisers who shun backbiting and value secrecy. But that close-knit culture could be tested as Romney's campaign staff expands to compete against President Barack Obama in the general election.

"It takes new money, it takes new people to come into the campaign," Romney said recently, mindful of the campaign growth spurt under way. "It has a whole different feel to the process than does the primary."

Change, he made clear, is certain ? except, it seems, when it comes to the top people who shepherded him through the primary process.

Romney's inner circle is arguably the same one he'll rely on if he wins in November and moves into the White House. The group has been with him for more than six years, including one failed presidential run. The team is so tight-knit that many of them keep apartments in the same building in Boston, around the corner from the campaign's headquarters on the Charles River.

"When we went through difficult times, where in other campaigns you might have second guessing, our team held together pretty tight," said Katie Packer Gage, a deputy campaign manager who was part of Romney's 2008 presidential effort. "There was never anybody turning on anybody else. There was just a very high degree of loyalty, ultimately to Mitt and to each other."

The risk of relying on longtime loyalists is that campaigns can become insular and unwilling to listen to outsiders.

That explains why Romney recently broadened his inner circle with the addition of Ed Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman with years of general election campaign experience. Gillespie, who was not involved in Romney's primary campaign this year or in 2008, was introduced to the mix gingerly over time and helped out behind the scenes long before the official announcement in April that he had come on board.

Romney's campaign will continue adding staff, and advisers acknowledge that is bound to put more stress on the core group.

But Gage doesn't see that becoming a big problem.

"As it gets bigger and you recognize that the needs of the campaign shift, there will be other folks that join the family, so to speak. People that are going to put Mitt Romney before any motivation or agenda," she said. "And as long as we have that in common, things are going to work out fine."

A look at Romney's inner circle:

THE FRIEND

?Bob White. He doesn't have an official title, but he's worked with Romney since both were partners at Bain Capital, the private equity firm Romney helped start. Romney called White for help running the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, and he's been involved in every one of Romney's political campaigns. He has an office at headquarters and often leads meetings.

THE SAGE

? Ed Gillespie. He's one of the few Romney aides with extensive presidential campaign experience. He headed the Republican National Committee during President George W. Bush's 2004 re-election campaign and later joined the White House as an adviser. Gillespie is the only senior adviser to join Romney's campaign this year.

THE VEEP VETTER

?Beth Myers. She was Romney's chief of staff during his term as Massachusetts governor. She also ran his 2008 presidential bid and is now leading his search for a vice presidential running mate. Myers is personally close to the candidate and his wife, Ann.

THE ATTACK DOG

?Eric Fehrnstrom. A former newspaper reporter, Fehrnstrom has served as Romney's spokesman since he was governor. He frequently travels with Romney and is considered an authority on Romney's record in Massachusetts.

THE BRIDGE

?Peter Flaherty. He oversees Romney's outreach to the Republican Party's conservative wing. A devout Catholic, Flaherty has deep ties to the evangelical community, as well, and has assiduously courted social conservative activists who have been reluctant to back Romney. Flaherty has worked for Romney for nearly a decade and was deputy chief of staff in the governor's office.

THE TASKMASTER

?Matt Rhoades. The behind-the-scenes campaign manager, Rhoades was Romney's 2008 communications director. His background in opposition research was obvious during the primaries as Romney battered his opponents with TV ads hitting their records on everything from the government-controlled mortgage company Freddie Mac to voting rights for felons.

THE GURUS

?Stuart Stevens and Russ Schriefer. Longtime partners, they are Romney's ad makers and senior strategists. Stevens, the lead speechwriter, is at Romney's side on the campaign trail. Romney frequently calls him after big campaign moments to check in and discuss developments.

The ITC Sangeet Academy in Kolkata

Indian classical music is ageless and is a true celebration of human existence. In this modern world where we are busy in copying the western countries all the time, the charm of Indian classical music has still managed to remain intact. Even today, a Thumri singer in Kolkata still gets all the love and respect that a talented Thumri singer used to receive from the audience thousands of years back. The true essence of Indian classical music lies in its melodious ragas, and soulful notes. Over the period of time, everything like, the ragas, notes, singers and the composers have gone through massive evolution. Although, various experiments were done with this style of music, but even after so many centuries, the basics of classical singing, are still the same.

Acquiring the skills of Indian classical music is not easy.

It is quite interesting to know that one who learns classical style music, can easily adapt to most of the other types of musical teachings also. Kolkata has always been a popular centre of music and art in Indian Subcontinent. There are only a few other cities in the country, that have an enriching cultural environment and hold as many classical concerts as Kolkata does. To promote Indian classical music the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata was established in the year 1977.

?

ITC regularly arranges numerous concerts that are solely dedicated to classical and semi classical music. These concerts attract thousands of fans of classical and semi classical styles of music from all over the country and world.

Devote fan flock in Kolkata, to get a glimpse of their favorite stars of Classical singing. It is an absolute treat for the senses to see these celebrated vocalists taking over the stage and enchanting the audience with sheer bliss and magic of soulful music. The concerts organized by ITC-SRA are truly a miraculous musical experience, which is an absolute must for any fan of Hindustani music. With the dedicated efforts of ITC these musical concerts are now being graced by the master of masters.

?

Apart from providing the fans a great way to see their idols perform live on stage, these concerts also act as a podium for the newcomers and help them to make their grand debut. These concerts hold a lot of repute in the music world, and hence all upcoming geniuses wait patiently yet eagerly for years to be a part of these events. When it comes to Indian classical singers, Kolkata is known for housing the best of the Best. The residents of this metropolis are surely very modern but are still firmly attached with their roots. The people of the city of joy cherish their rich cultural heritage and wish to inculcate the same in the minds of the upcoming generations.

?

From a very early age, the young children of the city attend the music schools to get training and guidance from the renowned music gurus. To salute this spirit and devotion of Kolkata, towards preserving the rich musical heritage of the country, reputed institutions like ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata are stressing, upholding and spreading the cause of Indian classical music internationally. These institutions and academies provide unparallel facilities and exposure to the upcoming Thumri singer in Kolkata so that the rich heritage of Indian music can be passed down to future generations.

Mystery WiFi Logitech webcam schematics leak, but no rolereversing hardware photos

Logitech's collection of subtle HD webcams launched a few months ago, but an unannounced WiFi-connected camera has appeared at the FCC. Labelled up as the Logitech Broadcaster, a little bit of investigation reveals that the camera may be able to function unencumbered by cabling, similar to Livestream's identically-named Broadcaster add-on or the ill-fated FlipLive cams. Connected through WiFi -- thus explaining its appearance at the FCC -- we still don't know specifics on how it'll be powered, whether it's through a self-contained battery or otherwise. Until then, emissions and wavelength obsessives can direct themselves to the source for the science.

Many people on the Internet want to make money by selling you the perfect home based business. in many cases they haven?t even tested the program themselves. Tip: thoroughly research business opportunities before committing or purchasing training.

Thinking Money will be make fast

Second mistake to avoid is thinking you can go from zero to a successful Internet business in 30 days or less. You must plan for a modest income the first 4-6 months.?Tip: understand that internet business has an intense learning curve, and for most people, it will take over six months to see any income.

Getting DISCOURAGED and QUITTING ?to Soon!

Third mistake is quitting an internet business training program to soon. What I did and you should not repeat is thinking that there is something wrong with a training program when the money doesn?t start pouring in. often it is a question of making minor changes to what you are doing and not the training program that is the problem.?Tip: stick with the internet business program that is training you, and only quite if you discover the type of internet business that the course is teaching is not in your DNA.

Take the High Road and Avoid the Low Road.

Forth mistake is starting to cheating when you get desperate. there are a lot of dishonest people out there making money on the internet doing bad things, and they want to teach you, for a fee, how to do the same things. Yes? these people are making money, but in the end, they will always be penalized. ?Tip: start from the beginning doing the right thing, and enjoy the peace inside!

Need to Pay your Dues.

Fifth mistake to avoid is not learning the basic stuff. the basic skills for succeeding with a home-based business is to create content, attract visitors and make money from you visitors. You can buy some product and services that helps you on the way, but you must understand and be able to handle the basic stuff if you want to establish your home business and survive.?Tip: learn the basics yourself, and after you have a grasp of running and internet business, hire assistants to help do the work of your business.

Tom Hardy And Charlotte Riley Become Bowel Cancer UK Patrons

Actors Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley have agreed to become patrons of Bowel Cancer UK after attending the charity?s 25th anniversary celebrations at No.10 Downing Street.

Tom, born in London, stars in the forthcoming Batman film ?The Dark Knight Rises? playing the villain Bane. A star of both stage and screen, Tom has also appeared in ?Inception? with Leonard Di Caprio (where he won the Rising Star Award from BAFTA), ?Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy? with Gary Oldman, ?This Means War? with Reese Witherspoon as well as ?Warrior? and ?Bronson?.

Charlotte, born in County Durham, is best known for her role in ?Easy Virtue? with Jessica Biel and Kirstin Scott-Thomas. Winning the Sunday Times Play Writing Award for Shaking Cecilia with her friend Tiffany Wood propelled her into the acting world. Since then Charlotte has starred in ?Wuthering Heights?, ?The Take? and has recently finished filming Ken Follett?s ?World without End? with Cynthia Nixon.

Tom Hardy said: ?I am delighted to become a patron of Bowel Cancer UK. I?d like to help the charity to increase awareness and to help stop people dying needlessly from the disease. I hope you?ll join me.?

Charlotte Riley said: ?I am thrilled to become a patron of Bowel Cancer UK. I?m joining the charity to make sure that both women and men are aware of the symptoms of the disease and know what to do about them. Early diagnosis is so crucial to saving lives.?

Deborah Alsina, CEO, Bowel Cancer UK said: ?We are really pleased to welcome Tom and Charlotte to the charity. We are looking forward to working with them both. Their patronage of the charity will add tremendously to the work we already do in raising awareness of bowel cancer and supporting those who are living with the disease.?

Super+Bowl+XLIII+1Ef3coWxMpalGetty Images

Winning a Super Bowl not only will complete receiver Larry Fitzgerald?s career, but it also will distinguish him from the growing throng of big-numbers-no-titles wideouts who can?t get in to Canton without paying the admission fee.

And so, as the Cardinals prepare to face the Saints on August 5 at Fawcett Stadium, Fitzgerald will get a little extra incentive for his attempt to return at least five years after he calls it quits.

In an interview with the Hall of Fame?s website, Fitzgerald addresses the fact that two former Pitt Panthers will be inducted the day before the game: ?Curtis Martin and Chris Doleman.

And Fitzgerald even breaks out some Pitt trivia along the way.

?Though my career at Pitt lasted only two seasons, the experience left me with strong positive feelings about the city, the university, the coaches, my teammates and the great people of Pittsburgh,? Fitzgerald says, even though a loss to the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII may have dimmed his view of the ?Burgh, just a bit. ??It was an enjoyable time in my life, and I sometimes reflect on the football program?s longstanding success. ?Our eight Hall of Famers covered every decade from the 1950s right through to the turn of the century, showing remarkable consistency. And, let?s not forget that?Joe Stydahar, a 1930s and ?40 Hall of Fame lineman, originally played for Pitt before transferring to our hated archrival, West Virginia. ?His Hall of Fame honor makes nine for Pitt, with an asterisk!?

Technically, Stydahar never played for Pitt, which is why Pitt doesn?t get credit for a ninth Hall of Famer. ?Whether Fitzgerald becomes the ninth is the bigger question.

?Every practice, every play, every series, every game of every season I?m in a chase of the pursuit of greatness,? Fitzgerald says. ??The standard has been set by the likes of?Don Hutson,?Lance Alworth,?Charley Taylor,?Jerry Rice?and?Michael Irvin. So, I just try and stay healthy, focused, productive and humble and reach for greater heights ? getting back to and winning the Super Bowl.?

If that happens, he?ll be joining the other all-time great receivers in the Hall of Fame. ?He still may make it without a championship, but it would be easier to get a bronze bust if he can flash a diamond ring.

Perry calls for 'transparency' for all candidates

(AP) ? Texas Gov. Rick Perry, weighing in on whether Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney should release more tax returns, says he believes all candidates should be as transparent as possible when it comes to tax returns and other aspects of their lives.

In remarks to reporters Tuesday, Perry didn't specifically call on Romney to release more tax returns. But Perry said that anyone running for office should give people what he called "backgrounds," including tax returns, if asked and if the requests are within reason.

Perry said he thinks President Barack Obama should release his college and law school transcripts and called it "odd" that Obama hasn't done so.

College transcripts are not routinely released by presidential candidates. Neither Obama nor Romney has released their college records.

Pauline Gaines: 7 Things Never to Say to Someone Going Through a High-Conflict Divorce

Not all divorces are ugly. Some exes mediate instead of hiring pit bull attorneys, sit comfortably together at their kids' school performances and maintain the same rules in each household.

Child support is paid on time. Neither parent speaks ill of the other in front of the children. Timeshares are flexible to support children's changing needs as they grow.

These types of exes genuinely want their kids to have a good relationship with the other parent. And bottom line: they get tired of being angry and get on with their lives.

To borrow from Nora Ephron, "In my next life I must get one of those divorces." Nine years after we split up, my ex still thrives on anger and revenge -- despite getting all the property, the timeshare he wanted, essentially full custody of one of our children and finding a legal way not to pay child support. He's remarried to a nice, accomodating woman, and the two of them globe-trot and hobnob to their hearts' content.

What, then, does he have to be angry about? Nothing! My ex, like most high-conflict personalities, isn't happy unless he has a target. While I certainly could have, and should have, handled some post-divorce issues better, my behavior isn't really the issue. His anger isn't about me; it's about his need to be in control and to rip me into teeny-tiny pieces. He will never, ever change.

Friends and family want to comfort those in the cross-hairs of a high-conflict ex, so they offer conventional wisdom. They believe they're dispensing sound advice because they're reasonable people and it doesn't occur to them that not everyone is capable of being reasonable.

These well-meaning statements often have the opposite effect than is intended. Instead of offering hope, the conventional wisdom sound bytes minimize the reality of those of us who are stuck with high-conflict exes.

I have compiled a list of 7 things never to say to someone going through a gnarly divorce. If you know anyone extricating herself from a union with Attila the Hun, please consider deleting these comments from your reservoir of comforting phrases.

1. She'll Get Over it When She Gets a Boyfriend/Remarries

No, she won't! For the hostile ex, a new beloved will not lessen her animosity towards her former partner. The new partner will become the template for All That is Good, further cementing the former partner's status as the template for All That is Bad. Often, the ex convinces the new love that the former partner is evil/incompetent/dangerous and the new boyfriend jumps on the slash-and-burn bandwagon.

2. Just use a Parenting Coordinator. My sister/cousin/next-door neighbor had one of those and they were able to resolve all their co-parenting problems.

This statement makes it sound like getting an effective PC is as easy as asking for an iced soy latte at Starbucks. In the state where I live, for example, a judge cannot enforce the use of a parenting coordinator. That means if one party wants to be collaborative, and the other party doesn't want to cede control to anyone, there will be no PC. The other problem with this statement is the presumption that a Parenting Coordinator will make things better. There are effective Parenting Coordinators and there are burned-out Parenting Coordinators, who can make a bad situation even worse.

3. Of course he has to pay child support! My sister/cousin/next-door neighbor took her ex back to court and the judge ordered the court to garnish his wages.

Again, a statement brewed in the tea bags of Reason and Fairness. People who are determined to avoid paying child support are crafty. They render themselves unemployable, yet have access to separate funds from wealthy family or significant others. Further, if they work for themselves, or their income is erratic, there are no steady paychecks from which to garner.

4. You should go to court and get full custody. Mothers always get full custody! Besides, the judge will see that he doesn't have the kids' best interests at heart.

It's a myth that mothers "always" get primary custody. One mother I know went to court recently because her ex-husband was petitioning for 50-50 custody in order to lower child support. She had clearly documented his lack of interest in the children as well as his questionable parenting techniques. The result? The judge didn't even read her pleadings and ordered 50-50 custody because he believed fathers should have joint custody. The trial was over in five minutes.

There are many reasons less-fit parents gain custody: they're charming; they're rich and can bleed the other parent dry in legal fees; custody evaluators fall for allegations of false abuse; alienated parents don't always present well due to being traumatized. Bottom line: being a mother does not guarantee that a woman will get primary custody.

5. Don't let the obnoxious things she tells your kids get to you! They'll figure out the truth eventually.

This depends on the degree of bad-mouthing. Even conscientious exes utter snarky comments about the other parent once in awhile. These garden-variety slips are entirely different from relentless, derogatory statements intended to destroy the other parent's reputation and relationship with the children. In these instances, some children don't "figure it out," ever. And the ones who do often don't get it until they're adults and are able to form their own opinions.

My son wasn't able to talk about the things his dad said about me until he went to wilderness camp and got support from his therapists. Now we're able to acknowledge the elephant in the room but our relationship will never be the same. Parental Alienation (PA) expert Richard Warshak offers great advice on how to address PA with children. And targeted parents should. Although he may intend to take the high road, not addressing a hostile ex's slanderous remarks can make a targeted parent appear guilty.

6. Keep all his nasty e-mails, then go to court and the judge will make him stop writing you.

My attorney once told me, "You don't go to family court to get justice. You go to get answers." And sometimes the answers suck. Egregious behaviors are often minimized. Emotional abuse is slippery, subjective, and difficult to prove. Hostile exes can be wily and persuasive in the courtroom. Where I live, family court cases are backlogged due to budget cuts. Judges are more interested in addressing big-ticket items like child abuse and moveaway orders than cyber-bullying. And even if the judge does order an end to e-mail contact, an ex who tends to defy rules will likely just find other, craftier ways to torment the former spouse.

7. You're giving him way too much power! Sure, he's a jerk, but what can he really do to hurt you?

A lot, actually. Dealing with a relentless, toxic ex is financially, emotionally and physically draining. Being unable to save your children from the collateral damage is devastating. Yes, exes can and should limit contact with a high-conflict ex as much as possible, but they will still have to deal with shenanigans until the children turn eighteen. Telling the target of a high-conflict ex to just man up invalidates his experience.

So what should you say? Say less. Listen more. Don't judge. Ask your friend how she's found the strength to make it through the fire. In this teaching moment, you're not the teacher -- you're the student.

Northland church building declared unsafe after powerful floodwaters burst into basement

The basement of Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Duluth is a mess.

A wall separating a hallway from the quilting room is broken out. Three pianos are flipped on their backs, as is a refrigerator. Throughout the basement, heavy objects are strewn about randomly as if by superhuman vandals. The entire floor is covered with thick, slippery mud, and it?s cracked in several places. The floor of the gymnasium is buckled. A brown line 5 feet up runs along all of the walls. But the line is difficult to see in places because wiring is damaged and the lights don?t always go on.

The brown line runs through the bottom of a portrait of Jesus on the wall of the nursery, one of the few items left standing after gushing water filled the basement sometime during the torrential rainstorm of June 19-20. Also still in their places are dishes in the kitchen cabinet, but they?re covered with mud.

?Appetizing, huh?? said Paul Rigstad, as he pointed at the dishes.

Rigstad and Tami Abramson, members of the church?s finance and facilities committee, offered a tour of the basement on Thursday, shortly after they met with representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration. Rigstad said the SBA estimated damage to the 50-year-old building to be at least $400,000.

There?s little the 80-some members of the church that sits between Walgreens and Dairy Queen on Grand Avenue can do to clean up the mess. The city has declared the building to be unsafe. Worship services have moved to the Cremation Society of Minnesota?s Duluth Chapel, a few blocks down the street. Church mail is coming to a post office box.

No one knows what?s going to happen next.

?We?re meeting on Monday to discuss what the next move might be,? said Mary B. Voss, a lay pastor and a member of the church?s governing body, known as the Session. ?It?s a pretty devastating situation.?

Church members say they know where the water came from. A city map shows a culvert that runs under nearby Public School Stadium crosses directly under the church and under Grand Avenue toward the Erbert & Gerbert?s sandwich shop across the street.

A private developer built the culvert decades ago for a creek that ran through the property, said Don Douglas, claims investigator for the city of Duluth. That may have happened long before the church was built. ?We have a number of those in the city where people developed land over a creek or stream,? he said.

?Over umpteen years it?s never been an issue or a problem,? Douglas said. ?But when you have a 500-year flood, the system can?t handle that much, and it?s going to cause some reactions.?

Abramson was the first to discover the damage at Westminster Presbyterian. Accompanied by her grown children, she went to check on relatives? homes the morning of June 20 and decided to check on the church as well. The water already had receded to about 5 or 6 inches, she said, but as they made their way gingerly down the hallway of the darkened basement, they could hear the sound of rushing water. Unable to see what they were stepping on, they retreated to notify other church officials and the church?s insurance company.

A return visit the next day offered a clearer picture of the damage, which demonstrated the force of the water that came into the church. A 5-foot radiator next to the quilting room wall that broke out still hasn?t been found, Rigstad said. An overturned box in the hallway had contained five sewing machines. Choir robes from one room ended up on the side of another.

Pointing to a jumble of boxes and materials in the nursery, Abramson said, ?The rooms all look like this. Disheveled. Full of mud. Things tossed around.?

The church has suffered water damage before, although not to the same extent. Two years ago in August, water came up through the sanitary sewer and filled the basement to 6 inches, Rigstad said. The cost of repairs was $96,000. This past November, the church spent $30,000 for a new furnace.

No one yet knows how much it would cost to make repairs this time around, or even if the building is salvageable, Rigstad said. The building is insured for $1 million. ?If or what the insurance company is going to cover, they have made no commitment one way or the other,? he said.

A forensic engineer is coming to offer his assessment ahead of Monday?s meeting, he said.

The city doesn?t appear to be liable, Douglas said.

?The culvert was not placed by the city, is not owned by the city, is not maintained by the city,? he said.

For the time being, conducting services at the Cremation Society is working well, Voss said. The chapel has a piano and organ, the building is handicapped-accessible and there?s ample parking. And it?s being offered rent-free.

Art Johnson, one of the Cremation Society?s directors, said no time frame has been established as to how long the church can use the facility. ?It?s just on Sunday morning,? he said. ?It works out with us.?

Westminster Presbyterian is part of a four-church parish along with Presbyterian churches in Cloquet, Carlton and Wrenshall, Voss said. They don?t currently have a pastor, but two pastors, a husband and wife, are coming to serve the parish in August.

The church is making do with its situation.

?Everybody is involved in helping out,? Voss said. ?It?s a great pleasure to know that everybody?s praying for us and working together to make things work.?
