Most People Don't Use Social Media to Its Full Potential

It's no great secret that Facebook is the hottest spot for social gathering since Studio 54. Since its launch in 2004, nearly a billion people have flocked to the site.

Facebook and other social media sites have enjoyed stunning popularity over the past several years. By users own reports, however, many don't seem to be unlocking the full potential of social media as a tool for both social and professional interaction.

A study of North American adults, conducted by Concept Metrics and sponsored by The Marketing Distillery, found people belong to almost two social networks on average. The same people who are rushing to sign up for these networks said they find "real life" interaction to be richer, yet they are not using social media to facilitate face-to-face meetings.

[More from Mashable: Facebook Welcomes Back Gifts]

"All of us Internet users are fast becoming social network users with more than 60% of us belonging to an online social network," JP Clement, founder and CAO of The Marketing Distillery, tells Mashable. "But that social online behavior is not translating to an increase in social behavior offline."

Check out the following graphic, created by The Marketing Distillery, that summarizes the findings of the Concept Metrics study. Then, interact in the comment section and let us know how you use social media as a tool to enrich your life, both socially and professionally.

Resident Evil 2 remake possible through fan support, says Capcom ...

Resident Evil 2 remake possible through fan support, says Capcom

Capcom is ready to consider a HD remake of Resident Evil 2 if there is enough support from the fans.

During a video question and answer session with GameSpot, Capcom producer Toshiaki Hirabayashi candidly spoke about the possibility of revisiting what is considered to the best title in the series so far if the fans made some noise for it.

He asserted that the company has not working on any such project at the moment, something that he felt was important to point out as such announcements were often followed by rumours of the remake already being in development.

He did, however, leave the gate open as far as a remake of Resident Evil 2 was concerned, stating that the game may consider the option in the future if the fans pushed them for it.

?Just to lay all the cards on the table, that way there's no rumor-mongering or things like that, no, we are not working on a Resident Evil 2 remake as of now,? Hirabayashi said. ?But if the fans really clamor for it; if there's a groundswell of support for remaking that game, then I think that's something Capcom would take under consideration.?

The company seems to be struggling to offer a satisfactory survival horror game experience over the past few years despite building a reputation of being the best when it came to this particular genre over a decade ago.

Resident Evil 2 arrived on the PlayStation One in 1998 and went on to become one of the best titles of its time. The game generally received positive reviews because of its beautiful presentation, immersive gameplay and gripping story-telling.

The success of the game led to the game getting ported to other platforms as well, which included but was not limited to PC.

Capcom is all set to release Resident Evil 6, with the game scheduled to arrive on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 2, while the PC version of the game will be announced at a later date.

The trailer of the upcoming game has failed to get the fans excited, which is an alarming sigh for Capcom.

Jazz-singing robot could shed light on consciousness

ROBOTS and humans will soon be living in harmony. A singing robot is being taught to improvise jazz duets with a human in a project that researchers hope will shed light on the nature of consciousness.

Antonio Chella at the University of Palermo, Italy, is working with a Telenoid robot, developed by the Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratory in Japan (pictured). To start with, the Telenoid will be trained to mimic the movements and simple sounds made by a human singer, as well as associate parts of music with different emotional states. Chella then plans to see if the robot can use these associations to improvise - choosing movements and vocalisations that complement its human duet partner.

Intelligence is often defined as the ability to find connections between existing entities - understanding that a key goes in a lock, for instance. But Chella suggests that a conscious organism should be able to go a step further and introduce novel connections - between, say, musical phrases - that result in the creation of something new. That, in essence, is the idea behind improvisation.

Jazz musicians interviewed by Chella talked of having a mental library of musical phrases that they were able to combine in new ways when prompted by other musicians. Importantly, however, this combination happens in a state that is "similar in a sense to dreaming", he says. "Not really conscious, but not unconscious." Chella wants to replicate these states in a machine. "Consciousness could be linked to these moments of combination," he says.

Chella presented the idea this month at the International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks in Lausanne, Switzerland.

"[This work] raises interesting questions about the link between consciousness and music making," says musician and computer scientist Philippe Pasquier at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. But he is sceptical about whether a robot musician needs a physical body, citing examples of AI composers that exist only in software.

Instead, Pasquier argues that automated musicianship boils down to two challenges: composition and interpretation. Software has already been developed that can imitate Bach, he says. Interpretation, on the other hand, involves the specifically human traits of taste and aesthetic judgement. "What made The Beatles famous was not so much their compositions, but the fact that the interpretations of the compositions were brilliant," he says.

It is not yet clear how an artificial musician would go about interpreting music in a novel way. But by mimicking humans and then learning to sing, Chella's robot could provide clues.

What does seem to be important is that human composers often listen to hours of music made by others. "Humans don't tend to do things in a vacuum," says Pasquier. Chella's robot better get listening to those jazz standards.

Nurse Left Stranded in Flood | MotorQuoteDirect ? Car Insurance Blog

You might be thinking when you?re getting your car insurance quote that you?ll be covered against all eventualities, especially if you are choosing a fully comprehensive policy, however you may still choose to use a separate breakdown recovery service. On this occasion, a nurse was left stranded in the floods caused by the recent downpours.

Sarah Tosh, the nurse in question was driving along an inundated lane south of Gloucester before her car stopped. After managing to get it to dry land and phoning for help, she was told that her breakdown cover did not account for flooding.

A wet affair

Ms Tosh was following a Land Rover down the lane when her car came into trouble. The Land Rover, better equipped to deal with such conditions sped on unaware of the incident behind. After becoming trapped in waist-high waters and phoning her breakdown company, Ms Tosh was told that she had to pay an extra sum for the breakdown in advance, a task which was surely impossible due to the situation. Expecting Ms Tosh to be able to make a credit card payment whilst trapped in a flood would be considered unacceptable by most.

Catch 22

To add insult to injury, Ms Tosh had been a member of her insurance company for twenty two years. She commented: ?It makes me so angry to think they would not just make a small compromise for me stuck in the middle of nowhere in the darkness. I have been with them since 1990 and I expected a little more sympathy from the company. I know they were busy but they outright refused to come and save me unless I paid in advance.? If it had not been for another 4?4 driver passing by and helping, Ms Tosh estimates it could have been some time before she would have received help.

What do her insurers have to say about this?

The insurance company?s spokesman emphasized that breakdown cover does not cover inundations saying that ?this was not an unforeseen mechanical problem. As a result, any assistance provided is chargeable to the customer and has to be paid in full prior to an operator being sent.? He also emphasized the importance of safety for employees.

National Psychotherapy Day: Therapists Reveal What Therapy Can Do For You

This post is written in honor of?National Psychotherapy Day, ?a day when clinicians, clients, and therapy advocates will unite to promote the profession, fight stigma, educate the public, and draw attention to the needs of community mental health.? I hope you?ll join us!

Therapy isn?t only for people with a diagnosis ? or in crisis. Therapy is a great way to enhance your happiness (or what psychologists call ?well-being?).

As Alison Thayer, LCPC, CEAP, a psychotherapist at Urban Balance, said, ?We focus on eating healthy and exercising to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but we often do not apply the same principles to our mind and mental health. Consider therapy sessions to be the equivalent of providing our bodies with a nutritious meal.?

In fact, therapy is nourishing in many different ways. Below, clinicians share some of the well-known, and not-so well-known, benefits of seeking professional help.

Therapy provides perspective. ?At times of high stress, even the most highly functioning among us loses perspective on the issues we suffer. Talking these issues through with a caring, attentive professional can provide immediate perspective,? according to John Duffy, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist and author of the book The Available Parent: Radical Optimism for Raising Teens and Tweens.

Therapy sparks self-awareness. Therapy helps you better understand your behaviors, thoughts and feelings. According to Thayer, ?If you find yourself wondering why you keep on engaging in the same, dysfunctional behaviors or why you can?t find the strength to make changes in your life, therapy can help you identify patterns and triggers to your behavior, and what you would like to experience instead.? It?s also empowering to realize the connection between your thoughts and actions ? and just how much agency you can exert, Duffy said.

Therapy is objective. A therapist can help you see your blind spots without the bias of being part of your life. ?Your therapist, like a football coach on the sidelines, isn?t actually playing in your game of life,? according to Julie Hanks, LCSW, a therapist and blogger at Psych Central. ?Family and friends are still playing on your field, but your therapist isn?t and has a different view.?

Therapy helps you change patterns. ?Therapy helps you recognize and modify your relationship patterns and attachment styles,? Hanks said. While it sounds clich?, our childhoods do affect our relationships, she said. Take the example of a woman whose father was volatile and abused alcohol, she said. Those experiences may color her current world, making her anxious about romantic relationships. Understanding how your early attachment experiences function today can be a huge help in pinpointing and fixing problematic patterns.

Therapy gives you ?me? time. ?Therapy is a place where you can focus on yourself for an uninterrupted hour,? Thayer said. That means that you don?t have to listen to anyone else?s problems or worry whether your conversation is balanced, she said. In other words, ?It?s all about you.?

Therapy lets you unplug. Most of the day we?re glued to our many devices: cell phone, computer, e-reader. In therapy, however, you unplug. And this pause provides many perks. ?This pause can help us take note of how we spend our time, what our priorities are, and what might be an unnecessary or unhealthy distraction,? according to Ryan Howes, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist and professor in Pasadena, Calif.

Therapy cultivates connection. Digging deep and discussing your innermost thoughts and feelings in a safe space with a therapist helps you face any fears of intimacy, Howes said. This isn?t just rewarding. It?s also good practice for your relationships. ?Many times, clients will talk with me about a difficult thought or feeling, feel the relief and reward of opening up in that way, and then go tell the same thing to their loved ones,? Howes said.

Therapy lets you unload ? minus the hard feelings. Talking to a loved one is incredibly helpful. But when the issue involves them, it can get tricky. In therapy, however, ?you can unload and vent to someone who isn?t going to be directly impacted by your rant,? Hanks said.

Therapy is a place to be completely candid. Everyone has bizarre dreams or strange thoughts or impulses from time to time, Howes said. ?One of the best parts of therapy is being able to share and explore the ?crazy? thoughts with someone who won?t judge, who is a legally-bound secret keeper, and who may have some insight into these incidents,? he said. ??

Therapy is an opportunity for a positive ending. According to Howes, ?Most of our relational endings in life come in the form of breakups, divorces, deaths, feuds, or drifting away.? The termination phase of therapy occurs when both you and your therapist feel that you?ve worked through your issues. ?[This phase] is a time to reflect on the work you?ve done together, process the feelings about the ending, say everything you want to say to one another, and have a good, clean goodbye,? he said.

Therapy teaches effective coping skills. ?[Therapy] add[s]?additional options and tools to [your] coping toolbox,? Hanks said. Having healthy strategies at your disposal helps you successfully process emotions, cope with stress and lead a satisfying and fulfilling life.

Fine Arts, Meet Pop Culture: the Art of Jos? Villarubia | The Clyde ...

Jos? Villarubia

Plenty of people make their own rules in the medium of comics and graphic novels (present company guilty as charged)?it?s one of the joys of working in a very elastic medium.

But one thing is quite rare: a combination of mainstream comics success, superheroes and all; indie cred, working with the likes of comics grand mage Alan Moore; and stature within formal and classical art forms like photography, illustration, and curation. Add to this mix status as a respected art and art history educator, and you?re down to one: Jos? Villarubia.

I first encountered Villarubia?s work when I read his graphic novel Veils, written by Pat McGreal. The book stood out because, rather than conventional hand illustration, it used digitally manipulated photographs?composites of scenes shot with actors and props, digitally rendered environments, and painterly effects.

Veils tells the story of a Victorian Englishwoman, Vivian, who is brought by her husband to an unnamed Middle Eastern sultanate. The book toys with Victorian conceptions of exotic Arabia, juxtaposing Western fantasies with harshly realistic elements taken from actual history. I found it enchanting, all the more so because it was so visually experimental. It helped that the writing was (dare I say it) many-layered and richly textured, and measured up to Villarubia?s?beautiful and entrancing images. There is far too much work done even in indie comics that resorts to exotic tropes, with no sense of awareness of the implications of doing so. I was delighted to find one that used them ingeniously as a narrative device, both visually and verbally.

Years later, I had the pleasure of meeting Villarubia in person, and of being on a panel with him at ComicCon. We bonded as intellectuals obsessed with the literary potential and rich history of visual narrative, and on our love of the medium and its wonderful flexibility for experimentation. I?ve followed his work closely ever since, all the more so because Villarubia, a native of Madrid, draws upon a wealth of visual material, and his modes of storytelling and favored themes are inherently cross-cultural, a specific fascination of mine.

One of many haunting images from Voice of the Fire, Jos? Villarubia?s collaboration with Alan Moore.

Much more recently than Veils,?Villarubia has worked on a number of intriguing projects. His collaborations with Alan Moore include Voice of the Fire, an illustrated narrative that takes place over the course of 6,000 years in Moore?s native Northampton, and The Mirror of Love, a book of illustrated poems that celebrates the history of homosexual love through the ages. Few get to work with the notoriously reclusive Moore even once, much less twice, to say nothing of visiting him in his home. But Villarubia is an artist?s artist, his range of technique and interpretation suitable for one of the most demanding, controversial, and gifted writers currently working in visual storytelling.

Also noteworthy is Villarubia?s work in mainstream comics titles. Superheroes are generally an all-or-nothing genre: if you?re working in that field, you?re not usually also doing things like The Mirror of Love. Villarubia?has worked on everything from X-Men to The Fantstic Four to Spider Man, most often as a colorist. He?s also recently illustrated an interesting commercial crossover: celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain?s foray into the comics medium, Get Jiro, a story set in a dystopian future L.A. ruled by?you guessed it?master chefs, who also serve as crime lords.

All this, and Villarubia also finds time to be an educator. He?s the chair of the illustration department of the Maryland Institute College of Art, having previously taught at Towson University, the Baltimore School for the Arts, and the Walters Art Museum, and has lectured at institutions around the world.

Some (both insiders and outsiders) consider comics to be a somewhat anti-intellectual medium. You?re someone who crosses freely between award-winning work in mainstream comics, as well as indie projects of a more literary sort. What?s it like to do this? And what?s your view of comics as literature as well as entertainment?

I do not think that anyone would say that a comic like Asterios Polyp is anti-intellectual, but yeah, comics have a bad rep among people that don?t know them. I like all different genres of comics, I always have. When I was very young I started by reading superheroes, children?s comics, comic strips and soon Robert Crumb and Metal Hurlant! And I thought they were all great. I still do, so it is logical I am involved with all kinds.

So, we?ve talked about this, because I couldn?t resist asking you when I last saw you a few years ago. What was it like to work with Alan Moore, and on those two projects specifically, Voice of the Fire and The Mirror of Love?

It was great! I love Alan, and I loved working on these. For Voice of the Fire he marked off Northampton and told me where he imagined each chapter taking place. I drove around in a taxi with Melinda Gebbie and photographed the sites. Later, back home in Baltimore, I did portraits of some of the characters.

An image from The Mirror of Love.

The Mirror of Love was a very personal project. I designed the book as well as illustrated and, with Alan?s blessing, had complete freedom to visualize it as best I knew how. I am thrilled it has been translated to Spanish, French and Italian.

You?re known for your work as a photographer?your fine art photography has been widely exhibited. Tell me a little about how you integrate photography into your work, and how you pair it with illustration.

At first I did this in Veils, Promethea and even a pin up I did of ?The Sentry? that was widely used, but I am no longer interested in using photographs directly in comics. I like looking at what other people do, and it was fun to do when it was new, but I am not so much into doing it any more.

The way I integrate my photography work into my comics is the same way I integrated my painting experience into photography: through the application of a learned aesthetic. Specifically, composition, light, color, and other formal values, as well as other image making aspects.

You were one of the first pioneers, as far as I know, of digital illustration and coloring, and certainly you?ve pushed the medium very far using digital tools in works like Veils. More and more comics work is being done digitally these days. What?s your take on this?

It makes sense, since the computer expedites the coloring process tremendously and allows for the timely production of what is mostly a periodically published medium. Also as computers and Photoshop have gotten better, the tools to color comics are very accessible. After twenty years or so, there is a ?method? to coloring comics and digital illustration that did not exist at first. Plus drawing on the tablet directly is becoming a better method of image making every day.

We?ve bonded on the subject of book craft. My copy of Veils has artwork printed on acetate, and I am sure you?ve experimented with other techniques.

When I first began in comics, I did not know Photoshop. I did ?color guides? that were then interpreted by another artist, who knew Photoshop. I know that instead of copying, my colors could be scanned and incorporated directly and this artist said that that was not possible, so I took a class, learned Photoshop and figured out a way to do it myself.

It was hard, but I do love a challenge and working with my friend Jae Lee, I had tremendous freedom. Then working with my friend Stephen John Philips, I did Veils. I did tight layouts for that book, he photographed the models in costume, and I combined them with bits and pieces to make the finished pages. It was complicated, but, again I had a lot of freedom. Later on I figured out other styles that made sense for individual projects and some artists, like Paul Pope, asked me to develop new ways to color their work with unique color palettes.

Is there a specific challenge you?ve faced working in this medium, something you?d do differently in hindsight?

I have no complaints. I actually had a great mentor in my friend Jae Lee, who, although younger, was very much knowledgeable about the comics industry?which I found at first shockingly different from the fine art world I was accustomed to. I have no regrets; I have worked hard, tried to be creative and professional and pursued my dreams? I still do!

Whose work do you find interesting these days, and who would you recommend to our readers?

Jaime Hernandez is to me the master of American comics. His last two issues of Love and Rockets are perhaps the best comic stories I have ever read. ?Browntown? and ?The Love Bunglers? should be mandatory reading to anyone interested in comics as art.

Adrian Tomine is just incredible. The most recent issue of Optic Nerve has two great, unique stories, not to be missed.

Daniel Clowes, Charles Burns, and Chris Ware never disappoint. Their work, when it comes out, is always a gem and becomes indispensable to me.

There are also European comics, mainstream comics, even some manga that I read and enjoy?too many to mention.

What are you working on the moment, and what?s coming up in the near future?

At the moment I am wrapping up two DC series: Captain Atom, which is part of The New 52, and Sweet Tooth, a Vertigo series I have been doing for three years. I am also coloring Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E. Next year I will do King Conan again and launch a new series with Jeff Lemire.

Badly Drawn Special Education: What The Causes and Treatment of ...

Learning disabilities in reading are just one of those generically described as learning difficulties, which can result in someone having problems learning specific skills. These are usually any or all of reading, writing, speaking, listening, reasoning and doing sums.
The causes of children's learning disabilities in reading are largely unknown but in some way the child's brain has been affected in such a way that its ability to collect and handle information is impaired. This in turn, may have been caused by:
1. Heredity - Learning disabilities are often inherited even if a generation has been skipped. Check whether other members of the family have had reading difficulties in the past.
2. Problems During Pregnancy and Birth - Learning disabilities can be the result of irregularities in brain development caused by the mother being ill, having an accident such as a fall, drinking, smoking or taking drugs during pregnancy. Equally, a prolonged labour, oxygen deprivation during birth or premature birth can result in abnormality in brain development.
3. Accidents After Birth - Learning disabilities can result from head injuries. For example the child being dropped or falling over, undernourishment or exposure to toxins such as pesticides.
Regardless of the cause, treatment of children's learning disabilities in reading is essential as soon as possible after discovery and this could take the form of any or all of the following.
1. Special Education - Special education is probably the commonest treatment for learning difficulties. Speciality teachers will evaluate the level of the child's problems as compared with their academic and intellectual potential. These teachers will then, basically, teach the child to learn by building on their strengths while correcting their weaknesses.
2. Speech and Language Therapy - Some learning disabilities in reading stem from difficulties hearing and speaking so appropriate therapies may be needed.
3. Medication - If a child's problems reading stem from attention deficit disorder then medication may be effective in improving concentration and attention span.
If you're not satisfied with the progress your child is making, following any or all of the above treatments then you could take some action yourself.
1. Employ a private tutor who specialises in helping children with reading difficulties.
2. Buy and online phonics based reading course which your child can do at home with your help. These programs are designed to be taken at whatever pace your child wants and they hold interest by using child-friendly cartoon characters to lead the child through the lessons. The lessons are short enough to hold the child's interest and they initially teach the relationship between how a sound looks and how it sounds. The courses progress from sounds to whole words and sentences and in addition to improving reading skills, the child will learn keyboard skills.

Japan Likely to Shift Focus to U.S.-Led Trade Pact

TOKYO?As a territorial dispute begins to impinge on Japan's economic relationship with China, the government of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda looks increasingly likely to shift its focus to a free-trade pact led by the U.S. from one involving China?at least for now.

Lawmakers of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan expect Mr. Noda to announce his decision to participate in the U.S.-led Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade initiative after an expected cabinet reshuffle as early as this month, following his re-election as party leader Friday.

"I expect Prime Minister Noda to decide to move ahead with the TPP following his mandate to ...

Enter: Tash

Hello! I'm Tash, and if you can think of a creative way to shorten that, then be my guest! I'm never good at these introductions, but there's a guide of sorts, so I'll follow that.

1. My username is Tash. It's been my nickname since before the dawn of time, and it's almost never taken, even on large sites.

2. I stumbled across the site when I googled "online roleplay". Thankfully, it was the first result, so I didn't have to stumble through sticky swamps of creepy 90's blue and black wallpapered chat sites where all the roleplays start with "A/S/L". When I saw the beautiful floral margins here, I had to stay.

3. This is actually my first attempt at joining an online roleplay community(evidenced by me googling online roleplay, and not something more specific). I have, however, spend excessive amounts of my life thus far with tabletop games, and personal roleplay, mainly with friends.

4. What am I looking for? What aren't I looking for? Thus far, I've only ever played with people I'm close to, both in proximity and friendship. Coming here is an exciting learning experience for me. I get to meet new people, make new friends, and play with people from completely different cultures with completely different ideas.

5. I only roleplay in post-german expressionist, sci fi romances. Just kidding. I like a little bit of everything if it is intriguing. That's boring though, so if this is going on record, use response A.

6. Well, if you haven't guessed, I like color. That's not really a hobby, so on paperwork I'd put "hex-coding" which is actually something I taught myself out of boredom. I know. Depressing right? At least it's colorful. In addition to that, I am actually a gangster, which also goes under hobbies and extra-curricular activities. I keep extensive journals to record me feelings, dreams, ideas, and anything else I want to shove in there, and I have done so since 7th grade.

7. Well, I am above average at waiting tables, and I can make a mean bowl of ramen. I am somewhat neuroatypical which isn't really an advantage, but it makes me excellent at tasks that require more concentration then usual, and my attention to detail is obsessive. Again, not an advantage all of the time.

8. No friends here sadly. Up until recently, I haven't actually spent a whole lot of time on the internet. I didn't even have access until sophomore year. But, I would love to make new friends here.

9. Yup, just provide state, city, ZIP and address, and I will send you a bag of homemade cookies. Your choice of chocolate chip, sugar, peanut butter, or hazelnut. Free shipping in continental US. Packages ship 3-5 business days from the day I buy the ingredients.

So...yeah. Hi guys.

Medical tourism becomes popular with affluent Chinese

Medical tourism becomes popular with affluent Chinese

Sep 23, 2012

Modern care and a bit of shopping is just what the doctor ordered.

An increasing number of wealthy Chinese are flying overseas, but not to shop for luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada. These people are looking for something not found on department store shelves. They are seeking beautiful faces, stronger hearts, clearer eyes or just a better understanding of their health.

Liu Yuan, a 31-year-old sales manager at an advertising company in Beijing, had laser eye surgery earlier this year. She was impressed with the care and the skill of surgeons at the private clinic she attended in Singapore.

"The long waiting time at public hospitals in China is so embarrassing and you can't choose the surgeon you want. And laser eye surgery in Singapore has a good reputation," Liu said.
The return flight cost her 5,000 yuan ($793) and she also had the opportunity to shop in Singapore. "It's a double-gain trip," Liu said.

She is one of the thousands of Chinese residents who choose to venture abroad for medical treatment. With the rising affluence and mobility of the country's emerging middle class, there's been a significant increase in the numbers of Chinese traveling overseas as medical tourists in the past decade.

Around 60,000 Chinese people travel abroad annually for healthcare services, especially for anti-aging therapy, cancer screening, to give birth and for treatment of chronic diseases, according to Yang Jian, CEO of the Shanghai Medical Tourism Products and Promotion Platform.

In January 2008, Shao Hui learned that his sister had been diagnosed with a 5 millimeter diameter tumor in her lung.
The diagnosis came from a hospital in Japan, which has some of the best cancer-screening technology in the world. Just a few months later, the same hospital told the 36-year-old businessman that he had cancerous growth in his stomach.

The results were beyond Shao's expectations. "We have annual health checks at one of the best hospitals in Beijing and they didn't reveal any problems," he said.

His sister decided to act on the suggestion of the Japanese physicians and have the tumor excised, but not to undergo any other treatment such as radiation or chemotherapy. The Japanese doctors also guaranteed that the cancer would not reappear.

"I talked with some doctors in Beijing and they were astonished. It's highly unlikely that such a small tumor could be detected in a hospital in China, and the doctors would never promise that there was no chance of a recurrence," said Shao.

Shao himself underwent a gastroscopy, an examination of the stomach and alimentary canal, in Japan. The treatment left a good impression on him. The procedure, usually performed through the mouth in China, is performed nasally in Japan, significantly reducing patient discomfort.

Shao and his sister were screened as part of a trial for his company, L'Avion, a travel agency that specializes in private medical tourism. Two years after the company was founded, Shao's family traveled to Japan for medical checkups in 2008. He later included the tour in the company's routes because of the treatment he had received.

Clients, most of whom are entrepreneurs aged from 40 to 50, pay thousands of yuan for overseas consultations and hundreds of thousands for surgery. At the high end, the service can include interpreters, tour guides, a first-class air ticket, a private driver and specially prepared Chinese or local cuisine. The company's most popular routes are anti-aging treatment in Switzerland and cancer screening in Japan.

Last year, the number of individuals in the Asia-Pacific region with more than $1 million at their disposal rose 1.6 percent to 3.37 million, according to the seventh Asia-Pacific Wealth report compiled by the consultancy Capgemini and RBC Wealth Management. Moreover, 17 percent of Asia's millionaires are located in China.

"Some, but still very few, of those wealthy people are aware of the importance of disease prevention. We are trying to promote the idea of enhancing the quality of life, rather than simply treating disease," said Shao.

Sheep serum therapy

Xiao Bo is familiar with medical treatment overseas. The 45-year-old from Jilin province in Northeast China works in international trade and spends most of the time in Beijing. A decade ago she started to pay regular healthcare trips to foreign countries, including the United States, Japan, Germany and Switzerland, seeking better technology and services than those provided in China.

Earlier this year, she paid 380,000 yuan for a trip to the Clinique Biotonus Bon Port in Geneva, Switzerland, where Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, was treated in 1992. The clinic mainly provides treatment for intense fatigue, burnout and problems linked with aging.

The purpose of Xiao's trip was sheep placenta treatment, which she first had two years ago. The treatment is typically used to produce clear and healthy skin, free of wrinkles and blemishes. "Just compare the photos before and after the therapy, you can see a more youthful appearance and I feel I have more energy. The injection of serum has also boosted my immune system and I've been almost illness-free for the past two years," she said.

Chinese patients need to be better informed about the impact of lifestyle. They need to learn the value of good nutrition and exercise and to be aware of the importance of preventative medicine, said Mara Bianchi, assistant director at the clinic.

She said that the clinic has received more Chinese patients since 2006, when it started its cooperation with L'Avion. The influx of Chinese patients has brought changes to the clinic. Most of the physicians and nurses can speak at least two or three sentences in Mandarin and the menu now includes Chinese favorites such as porridge and pickled cabbage.

Growing demand

An aging population and rising incomes have increased the demand for medical and healthcare products and services throughout China. According to the Ministry of Health, mainlanders aged 60 or older accounted for 13.3 percent of the population in 2010, an increase on the 10.3 percent recorded 10 years ago.

"It is understandable that people choose to get medical treatment overseas. Generally speaking, Western countries are better off than us in terms of economics, medical technologies, and care services," said Liu Zhongjun, director of the Orthopedics Department of Peking University No 3 Hospital in Beijing.

For the wealthy, receiving treatment overseas may provide mental relief, if the medical care, services and hospital environment are taken into consideration. However in Liu's opinion, the price of treatment is too high - as much as a dozen times more expensive than in China - and far beyond the reach of the average person, said Liu.

"If some people think that overseas doctors have better skills than their Chinese counterparts, they are wrong," he said. "Doctors in the larger hospitals not only have up-to-date skills, facilities and equipment, but also a broader view of individual cases than their counterparts overseas."

"I will not go abroad for treatment if I become ill," he added.

New wealth in Asia

Medical tourism has become a boom industry in the past decade, not only in China, but the whole of Asia, mainly because of the emergence of new wealth in the region.

Industry experts predict that medical tourism in Asia will grow at a rate of 15 to 20 percent a year, according to reports from Reuters. Meanwhile, the Medscape News website predicts that the practice could generate $4.4 billion in the region this year.

That raises the question of whether competition from foreign providers might help to lower the cost of private medical treatment in China, but Deng Kaishu, vice-president of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, said that's unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future because the number of patients is too small to make a difference.

"But the value of treatment for foreigners in China will inject new vitality into the domestic medical system," he said. "Traditional Chinese Medicine has great influence on patients overseas and we should better promote these services to attract them," he said.

Some medical service companies in China are making efforts to keep patients at home. Ciming Health Checkup Group, a leading private healthcare agency in China, set up the Oasis International Wellness Club in Beijing in mid-2011.

Membership services include free, extensive health checkups, tailored health management guidance, private doctors and overseas medical tourism services. Its clients, currently numbering around 50, are all Chinese and pay at least 120,000 yuan for a year's membership and around 3 million yuan for life membership.

Xu Qiong, a publicity officer for the group, says only 10 percent of clients aged between 35 and 55 have conditions that require surgery. "Most have non-life-threatening conditions and traditional Chinese medical treatment will always be the first choice. Thus, high-end medical services in China still have great potential," he said.

Apple IPhone 5 Launch Draws Fans In Droves Worldwide

-- In a now familiar global ritual, Apple fans jammed shops across the globe to pick up the tech juggernaut's latest iPhone.

Eager buyers formed long lines Friday at Apple Inc. stores in Asia, Europe and North America to be the first to get their hands on the latest version of the smartphone.

In New York, several hundred people lined up outside Apple's 5th Avenue store. Jimmy Peralta, a 30-year-old business management student, waited three hours before getting the chance to buy his new gadget. Was it worth the wait?

"Definitely," he said, noting that the new phone's larger screen and lighter weight compelled him to upgrade from the iPhone 4. "A little treat for me on a Friday morning, why not. Why not be part of something fantastic? It's just such a smart phone it does all the thinking for you, you can't get any easier than that."

Catheryne Caveed, 23, was in line at a Verizon store in the Queens borough of New York. An iPhone 4 user, she had no regrets about skipping last year's model, the iPhone 4S. The only real upgrade in the 4S, she said, was Siri, the voice-controlled "personal assistant."

"The 4S looked the same as the 4," Caveed said. With the 5, "everything is different ? even the headphones."

Apple's stock closed up $1.39, or 0.2 percent, at $700.09. The stock surpassed the $700 level for the first time earlier this week, as excitement for the launch mounted.

For Apple, the iPhone introduction is the biggest revenue driver of the year. Analysts expect the company to sell millions of phones in the first few days. This spring, iPhone sales slowed down from their historical growth rates, apparently because potential buyers were holding off for the arrival of the "5."

Apple now needs to sell tens of millions of phones before the end of the year to justify its position as the world's most valuable public company. Although Samsung Electronics Inc. of Korea sells more smartphones, Apple's iPhone profits are far greater.

In London, some shoppers had camped out for a week in a queue that snaked around the block. In Hong Kong, the first customers were greeted by staff cheering, clapping, chanting "iPhone 5! iPhone 5!" and high-fiving them as they were escorted one-by-one through the front door.

The smartphone went on sale in the U.S. and Canada hours after its launch in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Britain, France and Germany. It will launch in 22 more countries next week. The iPhone 5 is thinner, lighter, has a taller screen, faster processor, updated software and can work on faster "fourth generation" mobile networks.

The handset has become a hot seller despite a new map app that early users have deemed inferior to Google Maps, the software it replaces. Apple received 2 million orders in the first 24 hours of announcing its release date, more than twice the number for the iPhone 4S in the same period when that phone launched a year ago.

In a sign of the intense demand, police in Osaka, Japan, were investigating the theft of nearly 200 iPhones 5s, including 116 from one shop alone, Kyodo News reported. In London, police sought help finding a man wanted in connection with the theft of 252 iPhone 5s from a shop in Wimbledon early Friday morning.

Analysts have estimated Apple will ship as many as 10 million of the new iPhones by the end of September.

Some fans went to extremes to be among the first buyers by arriving at Apple's flagship stores day ahead of the release.

In downtown Sydney, Todd Foot, 24, showed up three days early to nab the coveted first spot. He spent about 18 hours a day in a folding chair, catching a few hours' sleep each night in a tent on the sidewalk.

Foot's dedication was largely a marketing stunt, however. He writes product reviews for a technology website that will give away the phone after Foot reviews it.

"I just want to get the phone so I can feel it, compare it and put it on our website," he said while slumped in his chair.

In Paris, the phone launch was accompanied by a workers' protest ? a couple dozen former and current Apple employees demonstrated peacefully to demand better work benefits. Some decried what they called Apple's transformation from an offbeat company into a multinational powerhouse.

But the protesters ? urged by a small labor union to demonstrate at Apple stores around France ? were far outnumbered by lines of would-be buyers on the sidewalk outside the store near the city's gilded opera house.

Not everyone lining up at the various Apple stores was an enthusiast, though. In Hong Kong, university student Kevin Wong, waiting to buy a black 16 gigabyte model for 5,588 Hong Kong dollars ($720), said he was getting one "for the cash." He planned to immediately resell it to one of the numerous grey market retailers catering to mainland Chinese buyers. China is one of Apple's fastest growing markets but a release date for the iPhone 5 there has not yet been set.

Wong was required to give his local identity card number when he signed up for his iPhone on Apple's website. The requirement prevents purchases by tourists including mainland Chinese, who have a reputation for scooping up high-end goods on trips to Hong Kong because there's no sales tax and because of the strength of China's currency. Even so, the mainlanders will probably buy it from the resellers "at a higher price ? a way higher price," said Wong, who hoped to make a profit of HK$1,000 ($129).

A similar money-making strategy was being pursued in London, where many in the crowds ? largely from the city's extensive Asian community ? planned to either send the phones to family and friends back home as gifts or sell them in countries where they are much more expensive.

"It makes a really nice gift to family back home," said Muhammad Alum, 30, a minicab driver from Bangladesh. "It will be two or three weeks before there is a SIM card there that can work it, but it's coming soon."

Others who had waited overnight said the iPhones cost roughly twice as much in India as in Britain, making them very welcome as gifts.

Tokyo's glitzy downtown Ginza district not only had a long line in front of the Apple store, but another across the main intersection at Softbank, the first carrier in Japan to offer iPhones.

Hidetoshi Nakamura, a 25-year-old auto engineer, said he's an Apple fan because it's an innovator.

"I love Apple," he said, standing near the end of a two-block-long line, reading a book and listening to music on his iPod.

"It's only the iPhone for me."
