The Star?s editorial | Latest jewels add to impressive collection of sports venues

DAVID EULITT

Fireworks erupted at the inaugural game at Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.

The rave reviews for the opening of Livestrong Sporting Park this month cement the Kansas City area?s place among the top-tier destinations for sports facilities.

The news really couldn?t be much better for this area?s sports fans. How good are these facilities? Consider:

?In the last few weeks, ESPN commentators agreed that the renovated Arrowhead Stadium is the toughest place to play in the National Football League because its design puts fans so close to the action, making it incredibly loud.

?The stunningly reworked and wonderfully fan-friendly Kauffman Stadium was picked to host the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, an honor for any park. It?s the first time the midsummer classic will be in Kansas City since 1973.

?Fans, sportswriters and players rightly have gone gaga over the stunning Livestrong. Sunil Gulati, head of U.S. soccer, summed up the general impression by calling it ?the best stadium of its size on earth.?

?And we have the universally praised Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City and the highly thought-of Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan.

In fact, with the speedway, Livestrong and CommunityAmerica Ballpark, the Village West development now makes a nice bookend to the long-praised Truman Sports Complex in eastern Jackson County.

And we shouldn?t overlook the very tidy and very busy Independence Events Center either.

In addition to providing a full range of sporting options, the Kansas City metropolitan area now has an enormous variety of large, medium and smaller buildings that offer truly world-class entertainment options.

And we will take another quantum leap forward this fall with the opening of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, which will provide a spectacular setting for music, theater and dance performances.

Becoming one of America?s ? if not the world?s ? great areas for sports venues has not come cheaply. In the last decade, we have invested more than $1 billion in these facilities. Those who haven?t taken the time to get out and see the full variety of what?s available should plan an outing, or two, or more.

It?s hoped that this collection of top-tier facilities will keep the Kansas City area up to date in the entertainment world for years to come, and that this variety will be used to bring in activities to suit all tastes.
