The End-Of-World Dance Playlist: Diddy, Britney And More

By James Dinh

If the headlines are true, and the end of the world really is really upon us this weekend, then there's only one thing I want to do: dance. Sure, the final day on Earth may be taken a little more seriously by others, but I'd like to go out with a bang and move to the beats of some of my favorite party tunes. Here's what I'm cueing up, just in case:

Trey Songz featuring Nicki Minaj, "Bottoms Up"
Believers suggest that an earthquake will trigger the start of the apocalypse on Saturday, so there's a good chance I won't make it to the clubs. On the bright side, I can vicariously live through Trey Songz, who sings of his dance floor escapades atop a thumping beat on "Bottoms Up." Minaj also adds some flavor to the track by showing off her ever-changing rap flow with her alter-ego Roman Zolanski.

Britney Spears, "Till the World Ends"
It's only fitting to throw in this Britney track into the mix because of the song's anthem-like feel and apocalyptic-related lyrics. Now if only I could find an underground party rave similar to the one in her Ray Kay-directed clip.

Gwen Stefani, "What You Waiting For"
Gwen steps up the adrenaline for the lead single from her debut solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. While the dance tune leaves me feeling rather anxious as she offers fans pants, yodels and belting on this electro-pop tune, there's really no better day to put an emphasis on time.

Diddy-Dirty Money featuring Swizz Beatz, "Ass On the Floor"
Diddy and his songbirds may have taken the Last Train to Paris with this Swizzy-produced cut, but the track's racing drums (sampling Major Lazer's "Pon de Floor") has me heading towards the dance floor every single time. Cue my impression of Diddy's Diddy Bop!

Janet Jackson, "Miss You Much"
Ms. Jackson (if you're nasty) was on constant rotation when I was young, so if the world is coming to an end, I'd like to evoke some nostalgic childhood memories with the addition of "Miss You Much." Even though Janet sings the tale about missing a lover, she appears happier than ever as she dances her way through a lavish pool hall in the 1980s black-and-white video.

Stay tuned for more of our end-of-days lists here in the Newsroom!

X-Men Giant-Size #1 ? Review ? Weekly Comic Book Review

By: Christopher Yost (writer), Paco Medina and Dalabor Talajic (pencillers), Juan Vlasco and Dalabor Talajic (inkers), Marte Gracia and Wil Quintana (colorists), Daniel Ketchum (associate editor), Axel Alonso and Nick Lowe (editors)

The Story: First to Last, Part I: In this new arc, the Neos, another mutant offshoot of humanity (different from homo superior) is attacking the increasingly misnamed Utopia. The neo?s have lost the ability to reproduce, as homo superior had done for a while, and now that mutants are being born again, they want the secret to what?s up. This battle royale drudges up some buried memories in Scott, really old ones, from the original X-Men?s first year: He suddenly remembers a run-in with the evolutionaries that he was supposed to have forgotten.

The Review: My first reaction to reading X-Men Giant-Size #1 was: ?That was pretty cool.? Superb art led the way, starting with a planet-scape, then dipping under the cloud-deck, and into a cave and some newborns. The detail, draftsmanship and colors were beautifully natural and the following action dramatic and clear. In the present-day, the clouds in the background of the giant neo were spectacular and the fight scene pretty awesome, although from time to time, the ?cameras? zoomed in too close, and it was tough to follow the blow-by-blow. The shift in art teams between past and present was a useful tool to highlight the change in setting and there were some nice old-school touches to the scenes in the past. My favorites were the Kirby-esque action poses, Magneto?s not-form-fitting costume, Magneto?s general portliness (you get a no-prize if you remembered that he started off as a middle-aged man before being turned into a child by Mutant Alpha in Defenders #16 and then aged back to his prime adult strength by Eric the Red just before Uncanny X-Men #104), and even Wanda?s sixties sort of physique (instead of the ultra-svelte pneumatic women that populate comics since the 80s). All-in-all, some very fine artwork.

Writing-wise, Yost has brought a piece of high-concept sci-fi to the X-universe. The introduction of the mystery of the evolutionaries, the hurtling fight scene right out of the gates, and the neat resolution of the plot challenge of the neo?s all launched this arc strongly. I felt propelled along the story and wanting more of this *big idea*. The dialogue worked, and the characters were mostly honest. Where they weren?t honest (Bobby?s exaggerated quipping in two time periods, Wolverine?s idiotic back-stabbing on the neo and Emma?s inexplicable failure to wake up their best strategist while they?re being attacked), I could see why Yost had chosen to fudge a bit, for dramatic effect, but since I?ve read some pretty flawless books by this writer, I felt he?d cut a couple of corners he didn?t need to.

On Yost?s big idea, I?m loving it, but my inner fanboy is asking a few conceptual questions. If the evolutionaries have been safeguarding the homo superior for its brief span of time on Earth, why haven?t we seen them before? Maybe they only show up at real crisis points, but even so, wouldn?t the Mutant Massacre in the mid-200s of X-Men have qualified, or last year when the mutant population dropped to under a couple hundred? And what?s their relationship to the Celestials? As any good Kirby aficionado will know, the Celestials have been fiddling with hominid DNA since time immemorial, or at least since Chariot of the Gods was published. Or, should I assume that the evolutionaries snuck onto the Earth between Celestial visits, like mice in a darkened kitchen? I don?t care which; I just hope Yost makes this all work with the rest of the canon. And if we?re going to nitpick, I?d like to do it in style, and say that the genetics in this book (and in X-Men in general) doesn?t really stick together well. I don?t want to make a nerd-fest of it, but if you want the details, let me know in the comments section. I?m aware that there has to be a certain amount of hand-waving to make sci-fi work, but these inaccuracies weren?t really needed for the plot to work.

Conclusion: I loved X-Men Giant-Size #1. Yost and his giant-size art team launched this arc with a lot of thrust on a true course. I?m definitely signed up for the next chapter in X-Men #12.

Canadian CEOs view HR executives as trusted confidants who provide ...

TORONTO, May 19 /CNW/ ? There has long been a myth that HR professionals are ?supporting cast members? vs. having a ?starring role? in modern-day business.? A new survey of Canadian CEOs by the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) reveals that HR does play a lead part at the boardroom table but has more to do to become the star.

In conjunction with Knightsbridge Human Capital Solutions, the survey? The Role and Future of HR: The CEO?s Perspective?asked a series of questions of 20 Canadian CEOs, including the value HR brings to the business; how well HR has performed over the past several years; what CEOs consider as their biggest human capital challenges; and what they look for in a Chief Human Resource Officer.

Results reveal disconnect
While many HR executives feel their contributions aren?t valued by chief executives, the CEOs view strong HR leadership as critical to the success of the organization. Overall, the survey revealed CEOs see their Chief HR Officers as valued contributors to the business; and trusted advisors who often play the role of confidant to the CEO and other executives. They believe HR is on an equal footing with other business areas.

?In fact, the executives felt their HR leads were instrumental in guiding their organizations through the recent economic downturn,? said HRPA CEO Bill Greenhalgh.

?One half had experienced big growth during the period, while the other half underwent significant downsizing. In both cases, HR?s ability to manage workforce levels and workforce effectiveness was critical,? concluded Mr. Greenhalgh.

Room for improvement
However, the CEOs did identify areas for improvement. Many felt HR executives fall short of really understanding business challenges, largely because they don?t get ?in the trenches? enough. The CEOs said HR needs to get out of their ?ivory towers??where they are perceived as too often developing impractical policies and programs?and better understand the challenges of supervisors and front-line managers.

As one CEO stated, ?If you don?t have a business-savvy HR team, it?s time to re-tool it!?

Moving out of the recession, the CEOs confirmed that HR professionals continue to play a significant part at the boardroom table, leading the organization on key challenges including managing across generations, continuous change management and communications in the age of social media.

About the Survey
The survey was conducted by Knightsbridge Human Capital Solutions on behalf of HRPA through phone and in-person interviews of 20 CEOs representing a cross-section of Canadian organizations.

Explosion at Foxconn Plant Kills 2, Injures Several Others

A large explosion blasted parts of Foxconn's Chengdu manufacturing plant in southwestern China earlier today, leaving behind 2 dead and at least 14 more injured. According to reports, scores of fire engines, ambulances, and police cars rushed to the scene. The cause of the explosion, is still being investigated, but as of this moment, no one suspects foul play. One report says it may have been caused by lightning.

A distant secondary concern to the loss of life and injuries and is what effect this might have on production of Apple's iPad 2 tablet. Production at the site has been suspended while the tragedy is being sorted out.

"Anytime you have an explosion of this nature, you've got to assume that there's some impact on the production line," said Rhoda Alexander, an analyst for IHS iSuppli.

In this case, Apple is already struggling to keep with demand for the iPad 2, which was showing a shipping delay of one to two weeks on Apple's website before the explosion occurred.

Needless to say, our thoughts go out to the victims and our best wishes for a speedy recovery to those who survived but were injured.
